This is not a top 2 list by any means for GHQ but a thought list for all of us to present a couple of ships to GHQ for their top 2 consideration.
I will post every few days on the top merchant ships I think would cover each nation nicely. There are so many great ship classes in the list I complied, but I tried to give in the following lists the more numerous and famous types with a good mixture. It is my hope that viewers and GHQ will look it over and make at least some of these badly needed Merchant ships.

Any Suggestions plese let me know, I'll research them and post.

GHQ: If any of these are considered, I will research them to find any plans, drawings and pictures to provided. I WILL POST BY EACH SHIP TYPE IF I HAVE PICTURES OR DRAWINGS.

Japan, Germany & Italy Complete 7-28-08 0,Italy up-dated 7-22-08, 7-18-08.

AK

Italy started the war with a good size Merchant fleet. The following 11 ships are what I found to be a good representation of that fleet.

6. Giulio Giordani was similiar to 2 other tankers built right as the war started and are equals to the Nesho at 524'

Germany had a large merchant fleet, but with the war starting many ships were interned.
The following ships were still under German Flag and would best represent for a limited use as Britain did her best to rule the oceans. Germany's Raiders must be included here as they were a extreme test to the Allies to find and sink. Many Merchants served as supply ships to U-Boats & Raiders a like, the Altmark being just 1 class of many. The following 22 ships would be great assets to the German Fleet.

AD
1. Carl Peters: Only 2 of 4 were finished, these were intended to support the fast fleet attack ships. She was sunk by a mine in 1945 and her sister Adolf Luderitz disappeared behind the iron curtain after the war:
AK
2. Heinz: 4 Ships built by the same builder in 1928 A small AK at 329'
3. Eider Pre-war ship 6 ships built in the Mid 1930s 377'-3"
4. Konigsberg: 5 Ships built in the 1920s 431'-6"
5. Rio Grande: 6 Ships built, The Rio Grande took off survivors from the Thor. 476'
6. Reichenfels: 9 Ships built in the 1930s 508'-6" 2 Sister ships became the Atlantis & Penguin
7. Widar 4 ships built in the 1930s was a typical German Tramper.
AH
8. Robert Ley: Near sister ship of the Wilhelm Gustloff 1 model could do both ships, Robert Ley survived the war to be scrapped in 1947
9. Stuttgart: She was attacked and sunk while serving as an AH though she was wearing red crosses, she was said to have been camouflaged at dock.
AMC
10. Atlantis Sinking 22 Ships and finally being sunk by the Devonshire she was notably a record holder. She could also be used to model 5 Japanese ships of similar size and shape not listed furthering the Japanese AKs.
11. Thor: Another top scorer of the German AMCs was small but fast so she would make for a great opponent for any UK AMC. She met her end, not at the hands of the RN, but rather in a accidental explosion aboard the Altmark in Japan which she was moored next to.
12. Orion & Widder as near sister ships one ship could be used to model both Raiders though the Orion had a much more distinguished career.
13. Pinguin: In less than a year she sank 28 ships only to fall victim to the HMS Cornwall. She was a sister ship to the Atlantis.
14. Michel: A 1942 started, she ended up in the Pacific to end up the victim of U.S. Submarine Tarpon. She did have a career score of sinking 121,000 tons and was the last raider to be sunk.
15. Komoron Last of the AMC I would suggest, she meet her demise along with the HMAS Sydney in showdown the caused both of their losses.
AO
16. Adria: 2 Tankers built in the late 20s measuring at 430'-11"
17. Germania: 2 Typical late 1930s Tankers 510'-6"
18. Altmark: she was best known for the Altmark Incident in Norway and supply ship for the Graf Spee. 4 sisterships.
AP
19: Wilhelm Gustloff: She operated as a Troopship and at the end of the war to evacuate refugees from the Eastern front only to be sunk with great loss of lives by a Russian submarine. 1938 Sister ship to the Robert Ley
20. Monte Rosa: 4 Ships built in the late 1920s She was used as a Transport and AH
21. Bremen: She and her Sister ship Europa were in German Hands, The Bremen was planned to be used as a AP for operation Sealion.
AS
22 Wilhelm Bauer: Only 3 of 8 were completed. The Bauer was sunk but her 2 sister ships went to the Soviets ( Otto Wunsche & W. Kophamel )

Shrouded behind the Iron curtin, facts about the Soviet History is coming to light .
The USSR ( Russia ) had a small merchant fleet in comparision to the other countries of the world, but the merchant fleet needs to be represented for the valiant effort by both the Russian and Allied sailors who braved the Murmansk Run to help keep the USSR supplied. The following 9 ship classes will represent them well.

AKs
1. Anadyr Class: 8 ships built inthe early 1930s 3 of the ships were given the nick name "Stalin's Slave ships" where 12,000 prisoners were kept. 314.7' in length. Built in the early 1930s.
2. Astrakhan: 6 ships, named ship was sold to Germany and then to Italy and was sunk in November of 41 by a Russian Submarine. 286' A small but worthy AK.
3. Buryat: 11 ships built after WW 1 These were small WW 1 designed AKs coming in at 261'
4. Kollektivizatzia: 13 ships built in the early 1930s these ships will give a realitively newer AK for the Russian merchant fleet. Mid size at 361'-3"
5. Arktika: 7 ships in the class also built in the mid 1930s but smaller at 337'-11"
6. Dnepsostroi: 6 WW 1 designed ships built in 1919 these are the big boys in the fleet at 395'-9"

IRISH,

This list is wonderful!

A list of ships, with their use, and the numbers built. I, for one, hope that GHQ will take a serious look at your research complied here for future consideration in models needed. Any (or all) would be a welcome addition. In fact I would add that if the shipping produced before and during WW1, and also used in WW2 would greatly help us all out in gaming, and collecting, WW1 and WW2. Hint, hint...wink, wink...nudge, nudge...know what I mean GHQ!

Thanks for sharing your research.

Neutral Countries often found their ships victims of the war as well. Around 900 ships from various countries were lost.
The following ships can represent Neutral or Smaller Allied Nation's ships.

Mexico:
AO
1. Panuco 4 Tankers of 464' use the British Daronia ( 484' )

I just thought I'd give this thread a boost - it was getting too hard to go back through history to find it.
If you make updates/additions as revisions and don't post a new message, the thread gets buried deeper into the past.

I have been begging and praying for more merchant types for a couple years, as my favorite scenarios are subs vs merchants/escorts, wow what a list! While i doubt GHQ could ever economically produce all of em, I sure would like to see a few on this list make it (especially the C type US ships, and more marus!)

Norway while she had a small navy actually had a large merchant fleet to bring in the goods that nation needed. While the country was occupied early on in the war, many of her merchant ships came under Allied control. The following 9 ships will cover her fleet well.

2. Hoegh Transporter: & ships built int eh late 20s to early 30s were a good mid size AK at 45'-0"
3. Talleyrand: 8 larger ships built in the late 20s to early 30s were the bigger AKs at 481'-0"
AP
4. Black Prince and Black Watch were smaller Passengers ships completed just as the war started and measured 385'-9"
AOs
5. Beaulieu: 8 ships of the class built in the 1930s were a smaller tanker at 408'-0"
6. Ole Jacob: 6 in the class these were the typical tanker of 483'10"

Although Sweden was Neutral Country she suffered heavily in loss of merchant ships suring the War. While a few warships like the cruiser Gotland would be a nice addition for the Bismark sighting the following 7 Merchant ships should cover her Merchant fleet well.

2. Argentina: 9 ships built from the mid to 30s Good size Merchant at 440'-1"
AO
3. Castor: 2 ships built in 1928 these were average size tankers at 486'-9"
AP
4. Suecia & Britannia, these were the only pair of Passenger ships built, 376'-4"
Suecia was torpedo by a U-boat after she fell behind ina convoy.
Tramps
5. Lena: 3 ships building in the late 30s A small Tramp at 315'-4"
6. Radmanso: 2 Ship class built in 1914 at 398'-8"
