So, I'm going to start painting some Italian tanks, but I need help matching a color in the Vallejo scale. I have good equivalences for the kakhi sand, red-brown and dark green, but the color "grey-green" elludes me. I can't find an FS number for it and none of the color chips I have seem to match the grey-green colors I've seen reproduced.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Sorry, no suggestions. I don't have much knowledge of Vallejo paints.

But a question ... what grey-green would you be applying to Italian tanks?

All of the information I have on Italian armor indicates it was painted base khaki sand (most often), sometimes with a camo pattern of red-brown and green on top, sometimes with a camo pattern of just green, or just red-brown. More rarely, it was painted base green.

I can not recall any references to a grey-green for Italian tanks. For trucks, for guns, perhaps. But not for tanks. Would be interested to learn more.

Oh, and BTW -- for my Italian trucks and guns, and continental uniforms, I have used Poly-S Italian Grey-Green. Easy enough. But no info on Vellejo paints. Sorry.

"Italian Medium Tanks in Action" (Squadron/Signal Armor #39) shows two color plate examples of tanks in using grey-green. One in Egypt painted grey-green/sand and one in Albania painted all in grey-green. "Italian Armored Vehicles of WWII" (Squadron/Signal) also show the grey-green being used in several schemes.

Upon looking at these sources, I find an FS number that I never saw before on the back cover! They give the equivalent for grey-green as FS34159. Does anyone have a good match for this one?

BTW, I am also painting 1/72 scale models, which may result in some scale-lightening.

Hmmph. Out of all my books, to be confronted with Squadron/Signals on Italian tanks ... that I don't have!?! Hmmph.

As mentioned, I use Poly-S for my Italian trucks, arty, and infantry uniforms.


I am pleased enough with the way they've come out.

Those do look nice.

FYI, I found that Flames of War puts out sets of Vallejo paints for their armies, and they reference olive grey(888), but that looks too dark.

on Vallejo's site which gives a handy reference for FS numbers. It looks like the closest match to FS34159 is German camo (833). I'll try that and share the results.

I have used Vallejo 888/92 with a drop of white and finally ended with GHQ CLR32 (mixed with some white-grey for highlights).
