I did do a search before asking this question, but I could not find the answer. So, I have a couple of battalions of Leopard 1A1 and 1A4 tanks for my WW3 German force and the time frame for my stuff is pre-80's, so the Leopard II will be the most powerful NATO tank in my force. However, I am wondering about what color was the most prominent on the Leopard 1 series tanks?

Drab green colour. Weird colour The A4 wasn't around until '82, but they were still plain green initially. Same as your Leopard IIs, if you've painted them.

I use Tamiya XF-65 Field Grey acrylic and like the results FWIW.

I plan on using Vallejo Model Colour 887 Brown Violet. This is a color mentioned on the BKC-CWC forum site.

I know this color well. It is what I paint some of my UNITED STATES ARMY helicopters for the 60s-80s. I would consider it too "brown" for Budeswehr vehicles...
What I do for some of my German colors of the period is base color just about anybodies "feldgrau", wash dark , and highlight with feldgrau mixed with white.

This color would be RAL 6014 Gelboliv. It is in the Olive Drab color range, so it has the same amount of confusion about it. It's a dark semigloss OD slightly tinted towards green as opposed to brown. By semigloss, it had a very low sheen, but too much to qualify for a matte color. But sorry, I can't contribute any paint suggestions...I've never had the reason to paint the color.
