Patriot defense Systems

I do 3D modeling and model a bunch of air defense system modeling, I have been thinking about possibly having some of my air defense systems like the patriot system done up in micro armor scale in 3D printing, since I found a place that can print extremely fine detail models the size of dimes and at a very reasonable coast that would not burn my wallet to have a few printed u .

I am just speculating about this right now and just wondering if anyone would like to have their own Patriot air defense units. Also I don’t want to tread on GHQ’S feet.

Perhaps someone from GHQ could maybe say if it would be ok or not to do this?
I’m not looking to compete with GHQ, hell I love GHQ models and the company and am going to be placing an order from them next month for some Hummers and helis.

Today patriot systems are more widely exported and it would be nice to have the entire patriot launcher system and radar and fire control vehicles if not for gaming but for display along with other micro armor scale models.

This is the 3D render of the current model, I am useing a model from my 3D game project I am working on and if this works out, I will do up a new much better detailed model for printing but I want to see how it goes with this one first

Thanks when I get the model sent off to the printer and get the finished model from them I will be sure to let you guys know how it turned out.

Guys I need a little advice on scaling.

I am trying to scale the test model down to the proper size but I am trying to figure out what is the proper scale.

Does anyone have any of the old patriot miniatures that were made? I need to know
how long the missile box’s are. Once I know the length of the boxes in Millimeters scaling the model will be easy.

Hope someone can help me.

Well I got the first few parts ready and scaled to the correct size and sent to the printer to be printed out as prototypes to see how they look.

Cant wait to see how they turn out will post a picture as soon as I get them from the printer.

I got an email from the printer today, for the most part they were able to print the model out but a lot of the details where so tiny and the printed parts flimsy that two of them fell apart when they removed them from the machine. They think my scaling was off for the parts to be 1 / 285

They said if the model was enlarged just a tad bit they could do another build and see how that turned out. Right now the missile tube was 18.92mm long I might have my scaling off.

I want to know how big of enlargement to my parts would be accepted for use still in 1 /285 gaming.
They recommend a little thickening of some parts and slight scaling of others. Perhaps making the launch missile tube be scaled up to and also checking and making sure I have the proper scaling for the tube.

The printer just sent me an image of a test run of the patriot missile tube and how it turned out the model is in 285 scales. Right now making final adjustments on my 3D model and going to have the final version printed out along with the rest of the Patriot system

Thanks Ben for the comment :) I will be sure to post some more pictures when I get the rest of the model done up. this will be a multi part 285 scale patriot. I'm going with having it multiable parts to make it easier to cast.


right now the model has four PAC tubes
the base for the tubes that the antenna attaches to and the rotating top mount that that mounts to. then the main bed of the syste and the legs side parts. so a total of 17 parts. but may redo it. still see how well the rest of the mini turns out.

How is 3-D printing accomplished? How much is a "reasonable price"? I'm looking at doing some 1/2400 sclae ships to cover what GHQ won't and this looks like it might be useful technology.

I have been designing some products to go along with GHQ's terrain maker product line and have been using 3-D printing to produce the prototypes for this project. There are two basic processes that can be used for this type of project: FDM -- Fused Deposition Modeling go to www.stratasys.com for a complete description of the process or Polyjet, go to www.objet.com for a description of this technology.
To give you an idea of the cost to make a prototype using these methods I got a quote this morning from a company called Red Eye RPM, a division of Stratasys, for them to make a very simple part, that everyone on the Forum can identify with, a 4 inch hex, same size as a Terrain Maker hex, but only 0.125 inches high. The volume of the hex is 1.010 cubic inches.(I am not making this hex.)
Using the DFM technology, the prototype made in ABS-White (a thermoplastic) is $39.00 and in PC-ABS ( a mixture of two different materials) is $42.00. The ABS-White can be produced overnight, is subject to a minium order amount of $150.00.
Using the Polyjet technology, the same prototype can be made in VeroBlack for $28.00 or in TangoBlack for $36.00.
I have used this company to make all my prototypes, they are quick, moderately priced, and responsive to my needs (I am a very small company, 1 person, and have no financial stake in either company). (I do wish I had the money to buy a Polyjet printer, but unfortuanately that is not the case.)(If you want to know about my project, contact me by PM)
