HMS Exeter, the British Heavy Cruiser that fought the Graf Spee and the Imperial Japanese navy only to be sunk after the Battle of the Java Sea has been located.
Austrailian and American search teams have located the Exeter in 200 feet of water about 60 miles from where her Captain listed her as sinking. The wreck was said to be in excellent condition showing just how badly she was mauled before being scuttled by her crew. She was discovered in April of this year. She and the HMS Encounter were both discovered. The remains of the U.S.S. Pope have not been discovered yet. Both the Encounter and the Pope acted as escorts to the Exeter when she tried to escape the on coming Japanese Fleet after the Balttle of the Java Sea.
