Consolidated Micronaut Wish List

Since I can't go back and correct the spelling on the "Consolidated Micronout Wish List," I will just start over again.

Here is my updated Micronaut Consolidated Wish List for 2010-2011. One of my favorites made the GHQ 2009-2010 production schedule. Admiral Scheer comes off the list and is replaced by early-WWII US Naval aircraft.

I considered for quite a while whether to replace Admiral Scheer with Deutschland/Lützow. Eventually I decided that GHQ’s success with Admiral Scheer will probably determine when/if Deutschland appears. If Admiral Scheer has good sales, GHW will probably finish up the three ‘pocket battleships’ in the near future. If not, it will probably be a long time before Deutschland appears. (This is a hint for all fans of the Reichs Marine – buy GEN20.)

For all the other Micronaut fans; you are welcome to post your list of favorites for me to compile.

So here's the idea:
- Provide your list of the Micronauts you would most like to see produced in the next season (currently, next is 2010-2011 season).
- I won’t put a limit on the number of ships on your list, but try to restrict yourself to about a dozen ships. In the 2008-2009 season, GHQ scheduled 12 Micronauts for release. For 2009-1010, they announced only eight Micronaut releases.
- Provide some support for your choice. Try to convince other customers that they want your choice and GHQ that your choices are good for the company.
- Although most my choices are from the WW II era, don't feel limited to this time. This just happens to be my favorite era. If you prefer modern or WW I era ships, feel free to express your opinion. Eventually, I want to get into Spanish-American War and Russo-Japanese War eras.
- Please feel free to criticize my choices.

My choices are (in alphabetical order of country of origin):

• Germany T-1939 class (T-22 through T-36 torpedo boats) - No one makes a 1/2400 metal model of this class, which was widely active during the war. With a reasonable number of ships in the class, many collectors & gamers would buy several packs. (GHQ models of the T-1923, T-1924, T-1935, and T-1937 torpedo boats would also be welcome, even though a competitor already makes reasonable models of these classes.)

• Germany AMC Kormoran – One of the most successful raiders of WW II, best known for its mutually-destructive battle with HMS Sydney. Surprisingly, no one makes a 1/2400 metal model of this ship. Any of the other German raiders would also be welcome (perhaps even Sea Adler from WW I).

• Italy CA Pola - This ship differed from all the other Italian heavy cruisers in its combination of hull and superstructure. No one makes a 1/2400 model in metal.

• Japan torpedo boats Otori class – Although a competitor makes a 1/2400 model of this class, its quality is not up to that of GHQ. These ships were ineffective in their designed role but were useful as escorts. GHQ does not produce any of the Japanese small escort-type ships of WWII.

• Japan late-war navy aircraft: Yokosuka D4Y [Judy] (both in-line & radial versions – neither had folding wings), Aichi B7A Ryusei [Grace] (open & folded wings), Kawanishi N1K1-J Shiden [George], Yokosuka P1Y Ginga [Frances]. Although Jill, Val, etc. continued fighting to the end of the war, they were meat on the table for Hellcats and Corsairs. I need some improved Japanese aircraft to make hypothetical late-war battles more evenly balanced. If hypotheticals are allowed, the carrier-based Mitsubishi A7M Reppu [Sam] would have been a good match against late-war US carrier-based fighters.

• UK BB Vanguard - Although this ship was not completed until after the end of the war, it could have been finished earlier and fits into a number of hypothetical scenarios. Besides that, it's a beautiful ship that no one models in 1/2400 metal.

• UK BB Lion class - This is the sole hypothetical ship on my list. Although none were finished, the first two of this class were at least laid down. GHQ makes models of the German H and the US Montana classes; which got no further. With Yamato & Musashi, the Japanese don't need hypothetical battleships. No one makes a 1/2400 model of this class.

• UK CL Modified Colony class (Ceylon, Newfoundland, Uganda) - All the available 1/2400 models of the Colony class are the earlier version with four triple-6" mounts. No one makes the version with additional antiaircraft replacing one of the four 6" mounts. Also, many of the earlier Colony class were modified to this appearance during the war.

• UK sloops Black Swan class - I've got plenty of 'Flower' class corvettes, but the British had hundreds of other escort-type ships (Bay, Loch, Bittern, Egret, etc.). Any of these would be a welcome addition. I selected Black Swan because this was the most-produced of the pre-war escort designs. Other than ‘Flower’ class corvettes, the only 1/2400 model of a WWII British escort is a competitor’s Avon (River) class – not a very good model.

• US Navy & Marine early-war aircraft [Brewster F2A Buffalo, Curtiss SBC Helldiver, Douglas TBD Devastator, and Vought SBU Vindicator]: As the Japanese Navy is missing late-war aircraft, the USN is missing early-war aircraft. The Buffalo, Devastator, and Vindicator are absolutely necessary for early-war scenarios such as Coral Sea and Midway. SBCs remained on some US carriers in the first few months of 1942 and some were used in the South Pacific in the scouting role.

• US CA-35 Indianapolis (final configuration) – We are getting close to being able to represent all the US pre-war heavy cruiser types in both early-war & late-war configuration. A late-war CA-24 (Pensacola) or CA-27 (Chester) would also be welcome, but Indianapolis gets my vote because of her tragic sinking. No one makes a 1/2400 model of a late-war Indianapolis.

• US BB-36 Nevada (as originally built) – Filling in the current GWS series of battleships (BB-26, South Carolina, and BB-36 are missing) seems reasonable. (I’m not really interested in the regressive and soon sold-off BB-23. Mississippi class.) Although neither saw combat at this time, both were notable designs. I selected Nevada for its “all-or-nothingâ€￾ armor and because Dreadnought overshadowed South Carolina. No one makes a 1/2400 model of this ship in its initial appearance.

I am putting in a list of my second dozen of most-wanted Micronauts. Compared to the previous list, US Navy/Marine early WWII aircraft has moved up to the first dozen to replace the scheduled Admiral Scheer and UK Fleet Air Arm aircraft is added in its place.

My choices are (in alphabetical order of country of origin):

• France BB Bretagne, Provence: GHQ’s FRN3, Lorraine, just doesn’t model the appearance of the other two ships of the original class. I might even suggest using this to start a GWF series, as their appearance didn’t change much between the wars.

• France TT Le Melpomene class: Not really successful in their intended role, many of these ships saw service as escorts on both sides of the war. I would like to have more of this type of small warship available in 1/2400 scale.

• Germany WWII Aircraft Pack 2 [Fw 190A/F, Ju 88 or Ju 188 (preferably with dive-bomber armament, He 111 (preferably with torpedo armament), He 115 floatplane, and/or He 177 (preferably with FX 1400 guided bomb or Hs 293 missiles)]: All five types played significant roles in maritime combat. If not Fw 190A/F, then Bf 109T – the Germans must have a single-engine fighter. Maybe even both fighter types rather than one of the Heinkel aircraft.

• Japan DD Akatsuki class: Although similar to the Fubuki class, the Akatsukis had smaller forward funnels and several other detail differences. To the best of my knowledge, no one makes a 1/2400 model of this class. Considering the popularity of Japanese WWII ships, the lack of a model for any Japanese destroyer class is surprising.

• Japan TT Tomozuru class: Similar in size to the French Le Melpomene class and wanted for a similar reason. The Japanese initially loaded too much armament on these ships, making them dangerously unstable. Although I would like one of the initial version eventually, it was the modified (more stable) appearance that saw combat in WWII.

• UK BB Duke of York (Anson & Howe): Although less famous than KGV and PoW, the remainder of the modern British battleships of WWII should be modeled. As with Prince of Wales, the superstructure differences are manageable, but converting the KGV hull is just too difficult. I would prefer a late-war appearance with additional light AA added.

• UK inter-war destroyer leaders (Codrington, Keith, Assinboine, Exmouth, Faulknor, Grenville, Hardy, and Inglefield): The British built a slightly larger leader for each of the destroyer classes from “Aâ€￾ through “I.â€￾ Although each of these ships was slightly different, they could reasonably be represented by three moldings.

• UK WWII Fleet Air Arm pack: By now, anyone who has 1/2500-scale British aircraft has plenty of Swordfish, but none of the other purpose-built aircraft used on carriers. Blackburn Skua, Fairey Fulmar, Fairey Firefly, and Fairey Barracuda would provide some variety on the decks. Gloster Gladiators and Hawker Sea Hurricanes would also be useful in addition to the available Sea Spitfires. All of these aircraft saw significant combat from British carriers.

• UK BB Prince of Wales: This is a historically-important ship that deserves a 1/2400 model. It’s just too hard to remove the external degaussing cable from KGV. Preferably, PoW would have the light AA that was added shortly before it was sunk.

• UK CA York: Exeter is much more famous, but York deserves a good 1/2400 model. The significant differences in the superstructure make it very difficult to convert Exeter to York.

• US BB-42, Idaho (as modified with enclosed single 5â€￾ mounts): This ship had a unique appearance and was involved in combat with this arrangement. To the best of my knowledge, no one makes a 1/2400 scale model.

• US BB-26, South Carolina: The design of this ship, with four twin 12â€￾ mounts on the centerline, was ground-breaking. Only the use of steam piston engines instead of turbines and the British effort that completed Dreadnought in near-record time kept this ship from being recognized as the first modern capital ship.

What strikes me about this list is that there is not one single Russian or Soviet ship on it, yet for 4 years the Russian/Soviet navy has been a major focus of the new models. I did a little research and compiled the following:

2006/07 - 11 releases of which 8 were Russian/Soviet
2007/08 - 13 releases (including A/C packs) of which 2 were Russian/Soviet
2008/09 - 12 releases of which 4 were Russian/Soviet
2009/10 - 8 releases of which 2 were Russian/Soviet

So 16 out of 44, over 1 out of 3 have been for a navy that doesn't manage even 1 ship in the consolidated list. There is some kind of disconnect here.

There are several WWII and modern Soviet/Russian ships that have been lingering in the 1-vote and 2-vote section since I first started the Comprehensive MIcronaut Wish List. The eight Soviet/Russian releases in 2006/07 would have predated my list. None of the more recent releases were listed.

I don't have any Soviet/Russian ships on my most favorite list, but I did like the WWII cruisers and Type 7 destroyers. Type 7U destroyers and Tashkent are close to making my personal favorites.

GHQ’s model of the South Dakota (BB-57) –USN71 – is armed with quad 40mm mounts. I would like to see an early-war version of South Dakota with (three or five?) quad 1.1â€￾ mounts.

To av8rmongo and ww2navyguy: I will add your votes to the compilation, probably over the weekend.

To cama: Sorry, but I’m not going to add votes in a block such as “all the UK and German WWI ships.â€￾ This is just too much work for me. If you post a list of specific ships or classes of ships, I will be glad to add these votes.
btw: There are very few UK and German Dreadnought types that have not yet been modeled by GHQ. For ships actually completed, there are Neptune (very similar to Colossus class), Hood (as originally completed), and the Renown class (as originally completed). There are several US Dreadnought-era capital ship classes yet to be modeled by GHQ, plus all the Austro-Hungarian, French, Italian, Japanese, and South American types.
For specific ships, you might want to take a look in the Comprehensive Micronaut Wish List. This has fairly complete lists of all the WWI-era military ships (down to torpedo-boat size) that have not yet been modeled by GHQ. The most recent posting was on 2009-06-16; WWI ships start on page 3.

In a previous thread on this topic, I submitted my 12 votes, and presumably a bunch of other peoples votes counted in producing the list of 100 ships.

Do you want votes resubmitted? I don't want to skew the results by voting twice...

I will also note that there is NOT ONE AUSTRO-HUNGARIAN ship on the list. This should ensure the AH navy becomes a key GHQ focus for the next three or four years (hee, hee). Actually, I noticed on eBay one seller who has large numbers of beautifully painted 1/2400 ship models for sale got a very good price on 5 AH ships - 3 Viribus Unitas and 2 Radetsky's. They were VF models, only slightly better than resin in quality. Imagine how much more those would have been worth if they were GHQ quality.
