Need help identifying AFVs

Post by HKurban »

Hello. I was hoping some of you armor enthusiasts could help identify some vehicles I got. I ordered a large lot off of Ebay to find many of the vehicles did not have turrets. I was able to identify most of them, but there are a few I am still stuck on. I was hoping I could get some help. Pictures from several angles are included below:

The white painted vehicle has a GHQ trade in the bottom and has similar wheels to 1950-1980s era US AFVs but it is smaller and does not match the profile of any existing American AFVs that I can find in the GHQ Catalog.

The tan vehicle does not have GHQ trades but it does have a hollow underside common to GHQ vehicles. It appears to be from the Leopard family of vehicles, however its turret is very far back and the body does not match the PzH2000, the only Leopard based AFV I can find with the turret back that far.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Vehicle ID question

Post by groundlber »

HKurban - Interesting question. A couple of possibilities: the one chassis could be for the Guepard SPAA gun, the other one might be for the Argentine TAM . I only have a very basic line drawing for the TAM, the turret ring appears to be far enough back. Don't bet the farm or even the doghouse on these being the correct answers, they are just the first things that came to mind. If nothing else, somebody can now say "No, you dolt, that's really a (fill in the blank)".

The tan one almost looks likes CnC version of the T-72.

Nope it isn't that one. Just checked.

Which one are you saying is the TAM? The White one has one too many road wheel and lacks the corner skirts of the TAM. As for the Geapard, it appears to have a more forward turret than what I am dealing with. Thanks for the guesses though.

I think you'll find that the tan one is a Merkava. The white one is definately a Leopard 1 - but it's a really old sculpt that is no longer in production.

My 2 cents

By George i think we have a winner! Definitely a match with the Merkava, thanks for the tank spotting! Too bad I'm not going to be fielding an israeli force...

Since the Leopard model is no longer in production, I can't look to confirm it, but since its ultra modern a Leopard 1 is no use to me.

It is a Leopard 1 hull probably a Leo 1A2 - I have a few of these old models but I would have to check for sure. The turret that came with it was a 105mm without a thermal sleeve as I recall. If you don't want I would gladly pay you for it.

And I agree the other is a Merkava.

No, i do not want it, and there are a number more models that came to me through assorted lots. I'm getting rid of including some Vietnam era stuff and some WW2. PM me if you are interested and I'll gladly part with them to anyone on here before it goes up on ebay.

Vehicle ID

Post by groundlber »

I was sure the one with the dark patches was a Leo 1 hull. Either my computer screen or my eysight is getting fuzzy, both vehicles look white to me, and tonight I have more brain cells functioning. I'll go along with everyone else that the other vehicle is a Merkava, That never occurred to me last night. I should probably only make posts when I'm capable of coherent thought, but what would be the fun in that?
Anyway, as I said in my first post, giving a wrong answer inspired others to give the correct answer.

The white and black model is a the old Leopard 1A which was discontinued back in the 90s and was replaced by the Leopard 1A1A with turret added armor and side skirts and Leopard 1A3/A4 improved turret design. The tan one is a Merkava Mk1 series.
