Question on CB Courageous model

Post by battlewagon »

After seeing the picture in the GHQ online catalog, my question is: Why does the main deck look like it is covered in speed bumps? Thanks.

Battlewagon;

I am not sure as to which area of the ship you are refering to but I do know she was fitted to carry 200 mines, so what you see may be the mine tracks on her quarter deck.

The areas are on the foredeck between the breakwater and the forward turret, and on the quarterdeck aft of the stern turret....very odd.

Those "speed bumps" are the Etna Stripping that the RN experimented with on the Courageous class - it's sort of an early version of linoleum. It was lighter than wood, and this class was designed for shallow draft, so they tried it. Apparently, it had the nasty habit of peeling off the deck when the main guns were fired! So it went the way of the do-do. There are photos of it out there, and more information can be found in R. A. Burt's book British Battleships of World War One.

Whiste Beek, thank you very much for the information. I've never seen that before, and I have a reference library that could sink a whaleboat!
