it's Ca-nal Defense Light. The early versions were Matildas and the later were all Lee/Grant chassis with dummy 75 barrels and a giant spotlight.

The CDL's were a decent sized project too, with more production that many people realize. The UK had 300 of them, and the US about 350. That was enough for two full British brigades and 6 US battalions. But they were only actually used a few times, most famously when doing a night crossing of the Rhine and Elbe.

I've also seen hints that they were used to defend the Remagen bridgehead and in Operation Clipper. But not sure how much I can trust Wikipedia on that.

A neat tank either way, both in concept and in its history.
