I'm not much of a naval gamer, but I have enjoyed those games that I've played and
certainly appreciate the modelling. Oh, and I am also un-repentant military history buff.

This seems to me like history in the making, and is likely to be of interest to gamers and
modellers alike, and so I present:

Image
The Russian Federal Navy Slava-Class guided-missile cruiser Varyag.

This is the first time I know of that a current serving Russian naval warship has visited a
US port-of-call. The Varyag came under the Golden Gate yesterday, and is now
berthed on the waterfront in San Francisco. It will be open for visitors this Thursday. I
plan to go.

For those who are interested, my gaming buddy (and imminent naval historian) Vladimir
Yakubov, the co-author of Raising the Red Banner: the Pictorial History of Stalin's
Fleet 1920-1945
, has already been to the pier and done a very creditable walk-
around. You can see it here: http://svsm.org/gallery/varyag

On July 21, 1989 Marshal Ustinov, the second Slava, pennant number 088 when she visited. Sovremennyy Otlichny, the third Sovremennyy, pennant number 434 (I think) accompanied Marshal Ustinov along with an oiler

On 31 July 1990 Soviet Udaloy class destroyer Admiral Vinogradov, along with the Sovremenny class destroyer Boyevoy and the Kaliningradneft class support tanker Argun, visted San Diego Naval Station

October 24, 2003 Russian Federation Navy Udaloy Class destroyer Marshal Shaposhnikov (543) visited Pearl Harbor. Shaposhnikov was later joined by the Russian Dubna Class Light Oiler Pechenga

I'm sure there have been more since then.

Nice photo

Wow. I stand corrected.

So now I know more.

But still the first time I know of that a current serving Russian naval warship has visited San Fransisco.
