I need some information
I was recently 'gifted' with a Salt Lake City model sans everything but the hull. My friend basically said here, dunno where all the pieces went.
So... what sprues would I need? What comes with the model?
Hafta decide if it's worth buying the bits I need to finish the model.
Thanks

This is just from memory; I'll check my storage for unfinished models (I know there's at least one of GHQ's Salt Lake City in it) and provide a difinitive answer tomorrow.
Aside from the hull, there are two superstructure pieces and two sprues with masts and gun turrets.
Sorry to say this, but you would probably spend more in replacing the missing parts than if you were to buy the whole pack.

Ray,
I would offer whatever I have in my parts bin but the movers just packed it up and loaded the truck, I won't see it until the end of October. Good luck.

Actually Don 4 sprues would run $7 which is less than the model. Of course I'd want to wait till I had something else to order but is is something to think about. I await your more precise accounting of the bits.Donald M. And thank you for doing this
Paul, no problem and thanks for the offer.
Where are you off to now?

Here is an accurate accounting of the contents of GHQ's USN40, CA-25 Salt Lake City:
- One hull (unique to USN40)
- Bridge, foremast, and forward funnel (unique to USN40)
- Aft funnel and associated superstructure (unique to USN40)
- Main mast (unique to USN40)
- Sprue with four twin 8" mounts (since you need only two per ship, if you have or purchase one USN40, you have enough mounts for both Salt Lake City and CA-24 Pensacola)
- Sprue with four triple 8" mounts (same comments as for the twin 8" mounts, except that you could also use extras from USN68 or USN84 - this will not help with the twin mounts, however)
- Sprue with three aircraft catapults (with Curtiss SOC Seagull on each - these could come from extras with any of the early-war US cruisers) [Correction 2010-08-31: there are four catapults on this sprue.]
Best outcome for finishing a Salt Lake City starting from just the hull: Purchase the bridge section, aft funnel section, and main mast section from GHQ. Check with other Micronaut modelers to see if they have extra gun mounts and aircraft catapults. (In fact,
I can supply the needed gun mounts and aircraft catapults. Let me know if you're interested.)
Another option: Purchase one USN40, the bridge section, the aft funnel section, and the main mast. This provides enough parts to model both Salt Lake City and Pensacola, [Correction: The statement "assuming that one is in the mid-war appearance with one of the catapults removed. For both ships in an early-war appearance, you need an additional sprue for the fourth catapult." is not correct. The catapult sprue has four catapults; enough for two ships in early-war appearance.]
Worst outcome for finishing a Salt Lake City starting from just the hull: Purchase the bridge section, the aft funnel section, the main mast, the twin 8" mount sprue, the triple 8" mount sprue, and the aircraft catapult sprue.

Don, thanks!
I'll need to think about it. Your suggestion about purchasing another one for excess parts is a good one.
In any case it will have to wait till I have something I need to order.
This forum, and it's members, are a big help to those of us who need it

Correction to the list of USN40 contents:
The sprue for the catapults has four catapults (I missed one that was loose in the package). This means that if you have one hull and buy one complete pack, you only need to order the bridge section, aft funnel section, and main mast section to have enough parts for two complete ships.
