I'm lookin to get into napoleonics, and am tryin to find some good rules, preferably free. I'd like somethin with a little crunch, but not advanced squad leader level. Thanks in advance.

You'd better be checking 'the miniaturepage.com". GHQ makes the napoleonic miniatures but not the rules for them.

I used 'General the brigade', they're pretty nice. I got them free because a chap at my former gaming club lent me a copy. :-) My suggestion is to find a club first, and check what kind of rules are used there (some rules require a particular basing, most of them does not, but all depends on what kind of rules the majority of the club members are playing).
Meanwhile you can start painting the minis, so when the time for battle comes, you'l be ready.

bye.

There are a lot of Napoleonic rules on the marker and free. The choice depends on your taste. You want a tactical game at battalion or regimental level, or prefer a grand tacticalk game. In other words do you want small battles or larger engagements.

The size of the engagemt do not mens necessarily more minitures ad the scale of the game change from 1 to 20 men up to 1 to 200 or so. So with the same numeb of miniatures you may field a regiment or a brigade or division. It dpends on you taste.

May I suggest to make a search on the web with "free Npoleonic wargame rules" and make your choice according to your taste after a few download.

Personally I like Valmy to Waterloo. Battalion to Army level, great for weekend corps level games. Bases the same as Empire so if you end up at an Empire tourney you don’t have to rebase. Within the Battalion you have Voltigeur and Grenadier figures as well as Riflemen in the British army.

The charts for Melee (Called reaction in the game) are a little squirrely but once you go through them one of two times you get the hang of it. One the plus side you don’t have invulnerability for certain types of troops just because they are certain types of troops. The old guard is powerful but if a player keeps throwing them into battles he will quickly wear them down.

Anyway in the for what it is worth column those are my favorite.

My club uses Shako 2. Plays well and you get decent results.
