Marking units

I'm using metal bases for my armies and was excited to use little colored magnets with markings on them to denote the units the stands belonged to. All the games I'm wanting to play, require some level of unit cohesion.
However, the magnets were too strong and I'm not sure I would find that right balance between strength and size...so I'm looking for other options.
I would like to keep it flexible so that I can change them up based on the game I'm playing.
The metal bases are very thin and won't accommodate painting of marks on the sides.
Any help is appreciated.
Identification and Marking

One idea, and hopefully it is within the perview of what you are looking for. Instead of putting colors on the base or stickers, another possibility is to put paint on the read of the vehicles.... Red on right rear fender/hull and if needed either the same or different color on the left rear hull. Then next unit change right rear and rotate the left rear hull paint color.
Another idea, get paper and cut in different shapes such as circle[ hole punch], square and then diamond, and glue to back of turret as I have seen on tanks including Abrams & Bradleys. Paint different colors, and then if needed, number them using Roman numerials. The colors can be yellow, red, blue, etc. Can also put the colors on the rear hull on a Bradley. I have also seen this done for identification purposes.
I have at one time put yellow paint from paint marker on right rear hull/fender to identify that that particular figure was mine. One thing I did on the back doors of a BMP unit was use an one dark red mark for company commander, two dark red marks for Rgmt commander painted low on the exit doors. Also used 1-2 gray color marks to indicate a heavy weapon.
Hope an idea may help you.

Those are good ones.
I do like the subtle markings on various parts of the model. That reminds me that I've heard of also marking bases with certain bushes/rocks etc.
On another forum, lighter strength write-on/wipe-off sheet magnets might work. I've got a sample on the way.

If you have any modern coalition forces vehicles, you may have noticed coalition forces paint chevrons on most, if not all of their vehicles. The chevron marking direction is as follows:
^ = Alpha CO
> = Bravo CO
V = Charlie Co
< = Delta Co
A diamond = HQ Company
If your painting or decal skills are good enough, you can also add the two digit number of the vehicle IE 11 for 1st platoon 1st vehicle, 13 for 1st platoon 3rd vehicle.
For my OPFOR I'm just painting a 3 digit number.
