Ferret Mk1 conversion to Mk2

Post by av8rmongo »

WWII collectors,

I have just ordered some of the new Ferret Mk1 vehicles which are essentially open-top scout cars. What I would really like is the Mk2 version with the small mg turret. To do the conversion I need a small, squarish mg turret. I'm mostly familar with the modern line and I don't think there is anything I can use. Do any of you know of anything from the WWII line that could serve my purpose?

The turret looks the same as the one on the Saracen. GHQ makes a Saracen. As I don't have any myself, the question would appear to be whether the turrets are a separate piece or integrally molded. From the catalogue pic it looks like it might be separate.

Hope this helps.

Gort,

Hmmm... I think you might be right. the turret pictured on Saracen looks like it could work. But for some reason I remember the Saracen as having the turret molded on as one piece. Maybe my memory is starting to go, I'll have to dig out the box and see if it is. Thanks.

I can confirm from having used both that it's the same turret on both the Ferret and the Saracen. Interesting in latter years (80s onwards) most Ferrets had their turrets removed again as runabouts for the armoured regiments - often a large metal basket was added over the rear deck.

Lighting catches the turret a bit wrong but either way, BAM....

Well I just got confirmation from GHQ that in spite of what the picture looks like the Saracen is a one piece cast for hull and turret. So much for that idea. The good news is they already shipped out my order of Ferrets.

After seeing the photo. HOW the HELL does a guy get in this vehicle. It looks to be that one has to be an Umpa Lumpa to squeeze in.

Still waiting for the package from GHQ with my new Ferrets but I'm ready to cast some resin mg turrets for the Mk2 version whenever they get here. And of course pictures when they're done.

Project update: The package arrived today. I filled the fighting compartment on the open topped Mk1 version with green putty. I have cast several mg turrets which will be attached tomorrow when the putty has hardened and been shaped appropriately. I think I will probably end up replacing the resin mg barrel with a short piece of wire or something before its all said and done. Then on to paint and detail.
