I am currently trying to put together an US Heavy Brigade Combat Team in 1 to 1 scale and am having a problem figuring out exactly the configuration. According to FKSM 71-8 May 2011 edition there are no AVLB's in the engineer companies. Are they no longer part of the engineer company that is part of the HBCT? If not are they attached from division assets? Also, the cav squadrons show no tanks as part of their TOE. Did they also take away the M1 tanks from the cav squadrons and go with M3 only? Thats what it appears but other TOE charts show AVLB's still there and M1 tanks as part of the cav squadrons. Its driving me nuts trying to figure this out. Any help would be greatly appreciated...

I dunno about AVLBs, but my understanding is that YES, the Cav Sqdns now lack tanks.

In fact, I think the Wiki article on brigade organization might actually be accurate.

I haven't kept up with Army TO&E developments in the past 2 years but it matches what I last knew.

Its kinda confusing, but ,no, there are not any AVLB or AVLM in the E Company of the Combined Arms Battalion . The new modular engineer battalions that were at one time, "corps" battalions now have Sapper companies that supposedly have the AVLB/M assigned. I understand these units would be assigned to Maneuver Enhancement Brigades to support the BCTs. What confuses me is what happens to the modular engineer brigades?
The 92nd Engineer Battalion here at Ft Stewart used to be a Combat Heavy battalion that transformed into a modular engineer battalion with a sapper company, vertical company, and horizontal company. The sapper company has M-113s APCs but doesnt have the old M-60 AVLBs that were from the old 3rd ID Engineer Brigade. Those beasts got sent to the railhead and are in God Kmows Where or sittin on a target range. However, M104 Wolverines that were once in the 4th ID Engineer Brigade were passed on to the Sapper Companies in the 20th Engineer Battlion at Ft Hood.
I guess my question is ....Has the M-60 AVLB been retired like the CEV ?

As far as I can tell all M60 AVLB have been removed from active service. There may be some still in reserve or National Guard units but cannot locate any info to confirm this. I know the Stryker Brigade Combat Team has the M1977 Transporter common bridge. It just seems that the Army would keep an assault bridging company with the heavy brigade but all current info says no. Thats gonna cause some problems I fear in any future conflicts. Also no tanks in the cav units seems a little short sighted too. its not like the M3A3 can stand toe to toe with an armored unit and slug it out. I guess their mission has changed since OIF......
