I am very happy to announce that the second phase of my DD-214 project is now complete! This is 2nd Brigade / 2nd Infantry Division, circa 1998. I’m not sure what the brigade looks like today, but back in 1998 it was a hybrid light/heavy brigade stationed in Korea. It consisted of two air assault infantry battalions (1-503 IN and 1-506 IN), a mech infantry battalion (1-9 IN), and in direct support was a Paladin battalion (2-17 FA).

For this project I’m only doing the killing stuff – no support vehicles and almost no wheeled vehicles. 2-17 FA was pretty straight forward: three firing batteries each of 6 x M109A6, 6 x M992A2, and 2 x M577). HHB only has 2 x M577s for the TOC and 4 M981 FIST-Vs. I’m not representing Service Battery at all. 1-9 IN was also pretty basic with four rifle companies of 14 Brads each. HHC has 2 x Brads, 3 x M577s for the TOC, 4 x mortar carriers and an FDC track for the mortar platoon, and 10 x M1025 HMMWVs for the scout platoon.

The air assault battalions were where I had some flexibility for organization. D company (anti-tank) just has their 20 x M966 HMMWVs with TOW launchers. HHC has 6 scout bases for the scout platoon, and the mortar platoon consists of a platoon leader base, an RTO/FDC base, and 4 x 81mm mortar bases. For the rifle companies I made a command base with a CO and RTO, a 60mm mortar section base, and three rifle platoons. Each platoon consists of a platoon leader base, an FO base, 6 x fire team bases for the three squads, and 2 x MG bases.

Naturally, all troops were in BDUs and vehicles painted the tri-color camo in Korea, but to make it a little more interesting I painted 1-506 in DCUs and desert tan HMMWVs as they would have looked deployed to Iraq. Each air assault battalion contains 109 infantry bases. Total count for the brigade is 218 infantry bases and 164 vehicles.

So my DD-214 project is now 50% complete! Next will be 3rd Brigade / 4th Infantry Division.

On a personal note, I spent my whole tour in Korea as a fire direction officer in B Battery / 2-17 FA at Camp Hovey. It was a great place to be a 2nd Lieutenant, and I am proud to say that I never got lost as a 2LT!
