Converting the LMTV and FMTV to armored cabs.

Post by Nazgul »

I want to share how I converted the LMTV and FMTV to the armored cab versions.

What you'll need is:
N-128 M1098 2 1/2 ton Truck
N-129 M1083 5-ton Truck
N-567 FMTV w/HIMARS

a razor saw (you'll see why you need the thin blade)
a xacto knife
your favorite glue
a this strip of styrene or brass to reinforce the cab to the rest of the chassis.

Here's what you'll need from the packs

I first cut off the equipment from the back of the HIMARS armored cab.

Next I glued the cargo areas for the FMTV and LMTV to the chassis. I then glued the cab for the HIMARS to its chassis. This gave me a guide for the saw as I cut them apart. Be careful when cutting the FMTV and LMTV chassis, the front wheels might get shaved flat on one side if you don't slow down as you reach the end.

This is the end result. I should mention that at this time I removed the mud flaps from the other cabs, they are not needed and only get in the way. You have to cut the cab sections off due to the angular shape and fenders of the armored cab.

Using a small strip I attached the cabs to the chassis. I thought about pinning, but I can never get right.
When I attached the regular cab I mounted it first and then attached the equipment. There is a 'ledge" on that part and will guide you how to place it.

And here you go. I hope this is helpful.

I had some turrets left over and mounted them on the cabs. I saw pictures of them when I started researching the FMTV. They look pretty decent and only took about an hour to do all four.

Now off to finish the other FMTV conversions before trimming and painting :).

Nazgul,
Nice conversion and thank you for spearheading this project. I was thinking of a conversion to use the armored cab on regular trucks. Have not gotten my Himars yet, UUhhhhhhhh.....

Nice job cutting and providing the visual aid. Be sure to show us when completely put together and then when painted. Thank you

Here's the pictures as requested. Not the best. I haven't finished with them yet, but all in all I am satisfied.

Now for some general conversions and trailers using some left over parts inspired by Allen's work and blog.
