Airbrushing Modern Israeli Micro-Armour

Post by kfeltenberger »

I'm planning on using an airbrush to paint up my modern Israeli micro-armour and was wondering if anyone had suggestions on which paints to use. Ideally, the specific brand/formulation/color should be airbrush ready. Also, are there any good primers designed for an airbrush?

Thanks!
Kurt

Vallejo makes a combination primer & base coat that shoots nicely through an airbrush. They have the usual black, white and gray as well as Israeli Sand Gray 614, which is good for 61 - 73 but too tan for their modern color scheme. The FOW folks recommend using Vallejo Green Gray 886 highlighted with Stone Gray 884. Model Master Israeli Sand Gray 2138 is a nice match for the modern color but I haven't airbrushed with it.

Thanks! I've been looking at the Vallejo paints and that's a good reason to pick some up.

If you go with Vallejo be sure to get the Vallejo Air line. Their normal paints are way to thick to use in an airbrush without experimentation to get a thinner mix that is still not a wash. Don't ask how I know this...

That's a good tip. Since I've never used an airbrush before, I want to keep to paints that are formulated "from the bottle" for an airbrush so I don't run into those issues. I'm thinking about getting Vallejo's complete set in the carry case to cover the bases up front.

Hi

I think that Life colour have two variants of IDF grey. A bottle of 1967-1973 and a Bottle of 1982+ . I am using life colour for my airbrush a lot. You can almost spray it from the bottle.

For modern IDF you can also use Tamiya Khaki green. Tamiya is also a perfect paint for the airbrush. Only you have to thinned till you get a milky paint.

Vallejo modelcolour. You can also use this paint for airbrush. Again you have to thinned ( with vallejo thinner) to a milky substance. I have sprayed with Iraqi sand my ...Iraqi tankarmy without any problem.

I am also using Vallejo aircolour...somehow I can't get the spray through my airbrus from the bottle. So I am also thin this paint to a milky substance

I've got the full set of Vallejo's Model Air colors, as well as the MIG Ammo color kit. When I have time I'm going to spray each one and see which one best matches the color. I need to get the AK Interactive IDF color kit as well, but they're all pretty close.

I might look at Tamaiya, but I really like the dropper bottles of the competition.

You'd need to look around a bit; I bought mine when there was a big sale going on, so I didn't pay anywhere close to retail.

Please be careful if you ever decide to use Vallejo Modelcolours through an airbrush. Some ( a few) contain cadmium which should not be inhaled.

I just did a test using paints CavDog mentioned above. Base is #886 Green Grey and the drybrushed highlights are #884 Stone Grey. I'm liking the results. The highlights are very subtle and do not really show up in the photos very well, but they are there.

Just found out that Hobby Lobby carries Vallejo in many camo colors. Great for WWII and Modern.
