Basing advise for 1/2400 micronauts

Post by hc1971 »

Hi guys,

I have built a Japenese and an allied fleet for the invasion of Dutch Indies.
I based them but I am not really satisfied about the result.

1/ Can anyone advise me on how to make bow waves and "engine waves" at the stern?
2/ What (vallejo) colors to be used for the sea and do you make the sea glossy
(by using medium gloss varnish)
3/ Has anyone experience with Vallejo Water effects paste?
4/ How do you make name tags?

Look forward hearing from you

Meanwile I wish you all already a Happy New Year

I posted my method recently on the "Micronaut Only Thread". It's on page 69.

Feedback time on name tags

I have made in MS Word a table and sized the colom and rows so that it fits on a base ( in my case 6cmx2cm). I used for lettering Calibri 9 and for the background a dark blue. It costed me some time as I am not a MS Word expert.

I printed the tag on a normal paper, cut it out and glued onto the base. I let it dry and gave then a first coating of gloss varnish.

Then is covered the name tag with masking tape ( of Tamiya) . I applied water paste of Vallejo while avoiding to bring paste on the masking tape.(As this is a test I did not glue an vessel on the base ). Then I let it dry.

When the paste dried, I painted the base with Vallejo ocean blue. For time saving I did only paint a base color and some white paint for the waves. Then iit was again drying time.

Now is it is time to remove the masking tape and put some water paste on the name tag area ( the paste is transparant). After the paste dried I varnished the base with vallejo gloss varnish so that the tag falls natural in the base.

some remarks:

1/ it is important to glue the paper good on the base. When I removed the masking tape I pulled the paper slightly from the base;
2/ I used a blue background but I think using a white background ( and black lettering) is more vissible on the table;
3/ Does someone know how I get a national flag followed by thename of vessel in a table in MS Word?

Thanks in advance

Paste in the picture, then on the Format section you can change how the text wraps with it.

For this sort of thing I would normally use PowerPoint or Excel, it's a lot easier to work with.

Heya. I don't do graphics in MS Word as I have a full suite of graphics programs (ex graphic designer), so can't help with the flags thing. You may notice I don't do flags on my bases, I use the title (HMS, HMAS, KM, IJN etc).

As to the paper, I use coated stock (gloss... in my example I used gloss photo paper) for several reasons; being gloss it makes the colour brighter... on normal paper the colour looks a bit flat. Second, it has a flat, polished surface so much less grip for the masking tape (less chance of pulling it up). It is also stronger than normal copy paper (80gsm) so less likely to peel off the base. I don't use glue as such, I use the Vallejo water effects clear as a glue. Sticks just fine.

BTW, if you use water effects to get the surface and bow wave, remove the masking tape BEFORE it dries... it's pretty strong stuff when it's dry. I use Mediterranean Blue for the waves, normal white acrylic for the highlights and cover the lot with the clear. Nice and glossy, and strong.
