WWII Microsquad conversion

Post by WargameHub »

I'm hoping to bounce an idea/math off someone.

GHQ Microsquad is 1"=25 yrds/meters

I want realistic ranges as I'm working on a Normandy scenario and terrain. I'm using an Abrams (since it's just over an inch long) as my guide. It's almost 10m in length so I was thinking if I multiply all the ranges/movement by 2.5 I will get roughly onto target. That should put it at 1"=10 yards. That puts the Sherman's 75mm gun at a 200" range.

I'm ignoring the difference between meters and yards for this.

Did I mention I hate math?

If you are looking to have the ground scale match the figure scale, then you are fairly close. At 1/285 then 1" on the table equals 285 inches in real life, which is about 24 feet or eight yards. So your estimate of 1" to 10 yards is not far out. And your mention of the Sherman's range highlights the problem - tanks can engage at a range on the table of about 16 feet. This emphasises that even using micro-armour the ground scale has to be quite significantly adjusted to get a game on a reasonably sized table. Of course in 15mm it is much worse - the dreaded FoW tank parking lot effect.

What will you do with artillery impact markers and relevant effects?

I will make the artillery templates bigger (a lot bigger). Come to think of it the FoW Devastating Bombardment template is about the right size.

Range won't be an issue since it's going to be all bocage. I want that feel of if you can see it you can shoot it in this game. Only small arms will ever be out of range and even then it will be rare.

This willl totally change the effect of artillery as the number of elements under the impact area will increase 6.25 times unless you re-base everything on 2.5x2.5" bases. This will keep the original proportions.

I can solve for that with groups counting as touching if they are within a few inches of each other.
