Painting a batch of Sdkfz 222's and was wondering what the items lined up on the front bumper/front end of the model were? I initially thought gas cans but obviously that doesn't make sense.
Thanks!!

My GHQ "222's" are at least 40 years old, so don't have such detail.
However, I can confirm that one of the external stowage options on this vehicle was indeed a gas can rack on the front "bumper".
I believe it normally held 5 cans.
If you do a web search on"sdkfz 222 stowage", you'll find some details...

Sdkfz 222 chad a 16 liters fuel tank for about 300 km range (on road). The 5 fuel cans will more or lesso double the range. In the desert some of these may be for water.
If you thjnk that they are in a dangerous position, give a look at the Italian Sahariana. .

Thanks Guys!! I trolled around the web a little more with some specific searches and found this:
"The final hull sub-type had the side hull cast visors located symmetrically as well as the turn indicators on the front fenders and no wheel guards. An additional large storage box was added on the left hull between the original storage box and the rear fender, resulting in the jack being relocated on top of the right rear fender. A rack of six Czech produced smoke emitting canisters were also fitted to the front plate as well as cast visors on the turret sides."
They do appear to be gas cylinders or canisters, so this may make sense...
Thanks again.

Looking at the catalog photo a bit belatedly, I'd agree they are smoke canisters.
