Sources for modern roads?
I'm after modern paved roads suitable for 6mm gaming. Asphalt with lines and markings. I've found a toy or two but they give you two pieces (straights and intersections – no curves, no variety).
What options are there for contemporary roads and highways? I'm open to paper, latex, plastic, whatever.

I can suggest you the Faller roads. I'm not sure if they can be to scale, but I remember quite impressive road products when I last saw their catalogue

I'm going to see if I can get some of these printed on vinyl at a banner shop or something. Paper can look just fine but it often won't lay flat, and won't conform to ridges and hills. And it slides around, is easy to bump. Something with more heft might work better. I'll let you know what I find out....

I've seen road done in the form of a tape roll but I couldn't find the specific one that I'd seen and thought was really good. I'm pretty sure it was a Z-scale item.
But also Allen's GameCraft Miniatures has a modular road system that he has for 1/285 scale and it's not pre-painted but he offers a stencil set to facilitate painting it. Not sure if this is along the lines of what you're looking for but definitely worth giving a look at.

I use Noch Z-scale road tape available from several Model RR outlets that handle the scale. The tapes measure 25mm wide and 1 meter in length. Noch has three colors/types of tape: Country Road Gray (which I use), Asphalt, and Cobblestone.
Here are a couple of photos of the tapes mounted on the GHQ TerrainMaker hex tiles (I also mount the tape on strips of 0.001" sheet styrene for use on game mats):
