Hmmm...To Modern or Not to Modern?

That is the question...
I bought a pack each of BMPs and T-72s which I have just finished painting (well the main bits anyway). I like the colors I've got. Base coat Coat d'Arms Army Green, heavy dry brush of Vallejo Gunship Green, very light dry brush of Vallejo Medium Olive. The olive adds a touch of yellow to the vehicles that reads "green" while the back green base colors still read "dark."
But frankly the prospect of banging out hordes of plain green tanks does not really thrill me now that I look at what all I would need to paint.
So, stick with counters? Go all-in? Or switch out counters for miniatures over time as the feeling takes me?
What to do, what to do....

Yes, you should definitely do modern! JMHO ...
I'm sure you'll find more than enough camo stuff to paint so you don't get sick of plain green: NATO 3-colour, US MERDC (cold war), Chinese, UK green/black camo and many others.

What got me looking is Team Yankee. So if I jump in it would be strictly 1985-ish to start.
I guess at heart I'm a horse and musket painter - give me lace, plumes and gaiters any time. Even modern camo is boring. I guess the real issue is armies used to like to "stand out" with impressive uniforms and equipment, and now they all want to look like dirt. Just not much fun....
I could just buy a can of spray paint but frankly at that point I'd probably just stick with counters. Make impressive terrain and let that drive the look of the thing.

Crap photo. Gotta work on the lighting they scan as "green" in person.

This won't help but you can dirty them up, lots of mud on the suspension and dust on the hull, extempore camouflage bits of foliage, nets dangling out of bustle racks, add crewmen in hatches.
Perhaps add Soviet air recognition markings, a big cross, front to back, side to side, if your Soviets feel they will have Air superiority
Anything to add character.
Moderns?!!!!

Definitely do moderns. For the Russians (or related, similar) spray paint a solid green, my preferred is Dark Green from Model Masters or a dark Olive Drab I buy at Ace or Lowe's. Can add colors later over the base of Dark Green if you choose. So have stuff to move and play now, enhance later if desired. For US, I use Model Masters Olive Drab (hobby shop or Walmart) for a bunch of stuff. Can then use Dark Green if you choose MEDRIC as the base.
Those are some thoughts for your consideration. Good luck with picking the best solution.

I'm going to pick up Team Yankee at Fall-In if I can and see if that floats my boat. I've got Fistful of TOWs III but haven't been able to get through the book yet.
