So I wasn't going to get involved in this imagi-nation naval arms race. I only have 1 GHQ ship model and I can't even paint 1/285 models well so it seemed like a bad idea. But then Nasorn88 keeps posting pics that pique my imagination, and then there was this estate sale with 1/2400 ships......

So how can I replicate water for something like an ocean terrain board? I'm thinking I want to not base the ships and just paint the boards blue with some harbor pieces or islands, but I'm wondering if there are any other easy ways to make water.

I used clear plastic document wallets, cut them open and painted the rear. Its ok, i think someone more skilled than me would make a better job of it.

There is a glue like substance called Water affects made by Woodland Scenic once you put it on it can be painted. I have used it for some of my ships.

I'm still experimenting with water, but now I have another question as I prepare to build my navy base:

When a navy ship has a "home port", does that ship have a fixed dock that it always goes to? Do they have designated parking spots, or can a ship be in a particular position, then go to sea, then come back ad go to a different parking spot because another ship is in the previous spot?

And sorry for the non-naval terminology!

It depends on the size of the base and the number and types of ships based there. There will be designated "carrier piers" for example but if there is more than one ship stationed there then there is no assigned parking. At least that has been my experience. For example in Yokosuka, Japan there is only one carrier forward deployed so it parks in the same spot. Similarly, the cruisers seemed to park in the same spots but the destroyers didn't seem to have assigned spots. At least as far as I can recall.

It is my understanding that most of the larger specialized ships have an area assigned to their class.

I forgot to mention the carriers I have been on in Norfolk and San Diego did not seem to have specific spots on the carrier piers. It all seemed to depend on what was going on in Port Ops when the berths were assigned. Certain types of overhaul or availabilities were best handled in certain spots.

home port is the specific naval base from which the ship operates from. Homeports are subject to change every so many years and are type of ship class orientated as to ship needs. Homeports in be CONUS (continental US) or abroad such japan, Italy, UK, and other such ports that may be able to accomodate them as well as provision for security. therefore aircraft carriers may not be able use submarines ports, however submarines may be able use ports where aircraft carriers are homeported
