Team Yankee Questions

Post by cabin4clw »

Hi,

I am considering getting into TY and wonder what I need to be able to play the first couple of scenarios. I do not have the book yet, which is why I am asking about this.

Could someone please let me know what types and numbers of miniatures that I would to start out?

Any help would be great!

It is a points based game, so does not include scenarios per se. But here is a sample 100 point army list:

I play a 100 point soviet Red Banner Tank Force:

- 1 HQ T-72
- 1 T-72 unit of 5
- 1 T-72 unit of 6
- 4 Gophers
- 4 Shilkas
- 4 Hinds
- Infantry unit including AA-Team with 10 BMP-2s
- 3 Carnation Howitzers
- Recon Platoon of 2 BMP-2s

My opponent plays a US Tank formation including:

- 2 HQ Abrams
- 4 Abrams
- 4 Abrams
- 4 Vulcan AAs
- 4 Cobras

Or alternatively

- 1 HQ Abrams
- 4 Abrams
- 4 Abrams
- 4 Vulcan AAs
- 4 Cobras
- Infantry unit (full strength but without extra dragon)
- ITV-unit (2)

That should give you an idea....

Use counters

Post by RedDragon »

Or you could print up some counters and see if you like the system before you dump tons of money into it.
Don't get me wrong, the miniatures are great, but don't buy them for the wrong reason or you'll be selling them to me at a loss. ;~}

For what it's worth, I'm going with counters. After drawing up a few army lists I realized I would need nearly 100 T72s alone. That's because in my club games are geared to 4 players a side, on a 6x10 foot table. Even if I bought bargain basement minis it would be over a thousand dollars. Then there's painting. I knew I would never get it done. Finally, I did order some sample packs. T72s, M1s, Bradleys and BMPs. They did not excite me at all. Just did not think the kit was all that cool.

So I bought a pack of counters off Wargames Vault for $35. I spent an afternoon touching them up in Paint/Powerpoint. Spent another afternoon printing them and gluing them to plywood bases from Litko.

In the time it would have taken me to paint a company of T72s I created both the complete US and Soviet forces from the Team Yankee book.

When the counters are on a well done table, it looks pretty decent.

The rule book actually does have scenarios based on the battles from the Noval. They vary in size from 1 M1 vs 3 T72's to Team Yankee vs a Motorized rifle battalion. So you would need.

2 packs of M1's
1 pack of 113's
4-6 packs of BM 2's
2 packs of T72's.
Or
4-6 packs of T72's
2 packs of BMP2's

You can play BMP1's instead of BMP2's but the BMP2's are much better.

Then when your ready you can start adding infantry.

US and Soviet are just the two that are included in the new stand-alone rulebook. BF has already announced that UK and FRG are the next up (sometime this year). There has also been a lot of speculation that US and Soviets will be getting additional units too (M2/3 Bradleys, BRDMs, etc.)

Remember that BF is a model making company that doesnt have much in the way of pre-existing "modern" model lineup. They will trickle feed the rules for additional units as they develop and make available new model kits. They know that a lot of us are going to play TY in other scales, but they arent going to encourage people to do this by releasing rules for everything but only offer a small portion of the models at game release.

I think Its worth mentioning that they included additional parts in there M1 kit to build M1A1s. It illustrates that they are serious about expanding and growing the game further.

I'm doubtful that additional books will needed or will even be published as the only thing one needs to play is just the Stat Cards that come with the model kits (and are available online) and the rulebook. This is a fictional conflict unlike the "historical" battles they cover with the FoW game with different book expansions for major battles and theaters. BF uses books to sell models, if this can be done with Stat Cards instead, so much the better.
