Poking around with the idea of making hedgerows…

If I am going to fill up the ping pong table, I am going to need a lot more.

Test batch drying…

New board started. First batch of hedgerows deployed. I thought about creating the terrain hexes with hedgerows but that is quite an investment. You would have to think of every combination of hedgerow and hex that you would need. So I plan on creating a lot more hexes that are flat, some featureless and others with fields. With the hedgerows, I thought about using popsicle sticks and build up the terrain using Mexican clay (air dry). Once that dried, I shot the clay/stick flat brown and drilled my tree holes. Terrained the clay with dirt/grass and then added my bushes. Then finished them off with my trees for the section. Im finding the popsicle sticks more versatile when applying them to the board. I can lay down hedgerows as I see fit. But the one thing I am finding out is that while putting down the hedgerows, you have to interact with the hex terrain pieces so the board flows.

When you start constructing the hexes and board, you have to place open hexes down along with farming field hexes. Then you have to start laying down popsicle sticks (hedgerows) so that it looks realistic. Sometimes those fields get to the way so you have to pull the hex and move it over and place a blank hex in the original position. This allows the hedgerow to lay flat and does not come into contact with the field. So you are kind of putting this puzzle together so that the map flows… HTH

Have a few pics of the hedgerows coming together.

Popsicle sticks, air drying clay, paint, terrain and add trees/bushes...

Hey Polish GI, or anyone else, any good tips on how to cut (with some accuracy) those 1" and 1.5" hill hexes? I haven't had good luck so far .... they come out pretty dicey looking... thanks.

Hi Burtwolf,

I assume you have the GHQ Normandy Terrain Maker booklet? It covers the cuts that you will need for hills. It does take practice to master the cuts. I need to get back to that and I fear I have to go back through that learning curve myself. Once that happens, I need to make a ton of them so I don’t have to come back. hehe

Also, what are you currently using to cut the hexes?

I use what is called a coping saw that allows me to follow the cut lines with decent accuracy.

They look like this:

Can be bought here:

ITEM NUMBER TWO HERE

Hope that helps.

Put the finishing touches on a project I have had for a while. I built the town out of a larger piece of terrain maker hexes and now I am building around it to fill in the table.

Once I finish up the table/terrain/hedges, I want to try out a scenario that involves the 82nd AB drop for D-Day. Should be fun…

Nice work PolishGI, I like seeing what you're doing with the hexes. I am almost done with my board although I have to make a whole ton of trees yet... Thanks for posting and keep it coming!
