Post by Nepty »

I need help painting windows on the WW2 Aircraft. I like the windows on the AC 104
SB bomber. Please give suggestions about colors and technique.

Thanks,

Nepty

I have never found a truly satisfactory solution, nor seen one that grabbed me. I paint them flat black, then add a rough patch of lightish blue in the centre of each glass panel. This looks better in flat windows (eg in lorries or side windows in bombers), less good on bubble canopies.

Hi Nepty

I painted the SB-2 for the catalog. I'm glad you like it.

For this one, I used Humbrol 145 Medium Gray for the window panels and a touch of very thinned out #34 Matt Black to darken just a bit. I then used some acrylic clear gloss over the window panels to give it some sheen.

I do the "glaze" after dullcoating and thin the clear with water and apply 2 or 3 layers. In this way the shine isn't too intense and with the water allows it to flow better as well.

Black is okay as well if you like doing your windows that way although I think pure black may be a bit intense but to my eye is much preferable to light blue.

Those are my thoughts.

Thanks Pete

It's good to know who painted the vehicles and how they did it. You did a great job.
I use Vallejo colors so I will try the medium grey that I have. According to the conversion
chart it suppose to be similar to the Hombrol color that you used.

Thanks

I think agree with the previous suggestion, but I paint the windows a body color, thin out black and put that over the windows so that the body color kind of shows through, and then put a clear coat over the top of that. I'm not as skilled as the painters on the website, but this is pretty easy, and gives a nice look. I agree that the sky blue look on the windows doesn't usually look great.
