A question for Tom, Mike, and PG: did the 81mm mortars in the mortar carrier ever fire over the front of the vehicle? My only real experience with mortar carriers was with the 120mm in the M1064s and we always fired those toward the rear of the vehicle, even though the tube can be traversed.
I noticed Tom your mortar tube in the carrier was facing the front of the vehicle, but then I also saw pictures online of M106 mortar carriers that appeared to have the mortar tube oriented to the front. Was that common? My only experience with 81mm mortars is as a dismounted mortar.

Unfortunately, I was never a mortar platoon leader, and my duties never really got me to the mortars. Customarily, they fired over the back. I have seen pics and film 81s firing forwsrd from halftracks during WWII.

Gentlemen,
I must confess that I have never seen an M106 in person, so I do not know honestly.
But wait; there's more!
I have added new pictures.

I think I read that one unit had them turned around in the half tracks, so it may have been an ordnance project.
The M21 halftrack was built with 81mm mortar firing forward.

I have added pictures of the Mechanized Infantry Brigade-. Front two M577's are the Divisional and Brigade command vehicles with two infantry brigade vehicles behind them. M113 is mostly CnC with a single GHQ. M577, M106 & M901 all GHQ.

Redleg,
It's supposed to be from the 24th Mechanized Infantry Division, but could be generic.

Nice work on all those, Pvt64. You certainly are getting a lot done these days. Keep up the good work.
