Being who I am, if the 82nd had them before the 101 converted to Air Mobile (after VN), then I would expect them to have Sheridans as an airborne division. But who knows.

Perhaps M41s

Nope, no tanks in troop lists, even before VN.

Lookin good Tom! I'm impressed that you can paint your jeeps so well! I can't paint anything that small without getting more paint on my fingers!

A question for Tom, Mike, and PG: did the 81mm mortars in the mortar carrier ever fire over the front of the vehicle? My only real experience with mortar carriers was with the 120mm in the M1064s and we always fired those toward the rear of the vehicle, even though the tube can be traversed.

I noticed Tom your mortar tube in the carrier was facing the front of the vehicle, but then I also saw pictures online of M106 mortar carriers that appeared to have the mortar tube oriented to the front. Was that common? My only experience with 81mm mortars is as a dismounted mortar.

Unfortunately, I was never a mortar platoon leader, and my duties never really got me to the mortars. Customarily, they fired over the back. I have seen pics and film 81s firing forwsrd from halftracks during WWII.

I don't know about 81s. 107s did not fire over the front. I wouldn't want to try to fire mortars of any size facing the front because of the TC's hatch and the driver sitting in his compartment, ready to MOVE OUT smartly.

Gentlemen,
I must confess that I have never seen an M106 in person, so I do not know honestly.

But wait; there's more!

I have added new pictures.

It's all good. I assume, based on what I'm seeing on the internet, that an 81mm can be fired over the front. Nice looking M113s Tom!

I think I read that one unit had them turned around in the half tracks, so it may have been an ordnance project.

The M21 halftrack was built with 81mm mortar firing forward.

I have added pictures of the Mechanized Infantry Brigade-. Front two M577's are the Divisional and Brigade command vehicles with two infantry brigade vehicles behind them. M113 is mostly CnC with a single GHQ. M577, M106 & M901 all GHQ.

Nice work Tom! Does this brigade represent any particular real US Army brigade, or just a generic mech infantry brigade?

Redleg,
It's supposed to be from the 24th Mechanized Infantry Division, but could be generic.
