Desert battle map

Thinking of making a desert battle mat via a canvas drop cloth using acrylic caulk.

Has anyone gone this route? Any tips/tricks?

I haven't but this YouTube should help. It is the old caulk & flock technique. You could probably skip the flock since you are want a desert mat.
