What are the other clues?

PG: The Y- x x x x x x license plate with the FRG flag is a dead giveaway. I did find it interesting that the display model still has the training gunfire simulator mounted.

Redleg: Thanks, go get some M48s. GHQ could use the business and I'm sure you have capacity on the workbench.

I have an H series Cav Troop, Infantry Company and Tank Company in M113s and M60A1s on deck to be painted in winter verdant MERDC.

besides those mentioned, I'd add the smoke dispensers and the position of the"IR-/Weißlichtscheinwerfer". Afaik, the US had the IR-lights in a central position above the gun.

a few M48 hulls are still in active service. Quite amazing, given their age.

Yes to all. The search light mounting frame is specific to the German searchlight. German smoke grenade dischargers too.

If you want to add the M48A5 to your collection, and you are as fussy as I am, your best course is to buy the Magach 3. Clip the 50cal from the main gun and add a 7.62mg - either an M60 or M240, to the commander's and loader's hatch. VERY FEW, VERY EARLY issued M48A5s had the original cupola, and those were installed only because the flat "Israeli" hatch wasn't yet available. There is a photo of a California National Guard tank with the enclosed cupola, but this was very rare. Only two battalions in the active component had M48A5 and those were both in South Korea.

GHQ's M48A5 is on the M48A2 hull, which had a gasoline engine, hence no air cleaner boxes. The Magach 3 has the air cleaner boxes. The fenders may not be correct, but you can only do so much.

The next challenge is that main gun on the Magach 3 has a barrel jacket, which, if you are exceedingly ambitious, you can replace. I choose to ignore that little detail, since, had they been used in action, it is likely the jacket would have been added.

If your inventory already includes GHQ's M48A5, you can turn those over to the Israelis. They had one company of M48A2 gassers that were given 105mm guns in time for the '67 war. The remainder of their M48s fought with the 90mm. I believe this "M48A4," of which there is an example in Hunnicutt's "Main Battle Tanks" Volume 1, served as the GHQ prototype. The air cleaner boxes and cupolas are the major clues.

Technically it's not an M60. Anybody ever see them shoot the demo gun on this thing?

Redleg,

I saw the engineers fire one of these things to clear an abatis at NTC, it made a massive dust cloud and there wasn't much left of the roadblock once the dust cleared.

Yes. The blast radius is greater than the range.

I wish I had been able to see one fire. I bet I can find some video on youtube. I've seen MICLIC and that's impressive as hell.

Anybody know if GHQ made an M60 or A1 model with the Israeli add-in explosive reactive armor?

Re: M60 Tanks

Post by redleg »

Sorry gents, another M60 question that may have been answered elsewhere - sorry if this is a redundant question.

I have some M60A1s and I want to build a full company of them, I'm going to give MERDC another try on these and I was going to do a company of 14 tanks. I know that at some point the tank companies transitioned from 17 tanks to 14 tanks, but I don't know exactly when, and I don't know when MERDC was in use. Was a 14-tank M60A1 company in MERDC camo ever a reality?
