A Bridge Too Far has always been my favorite, though it did give me some unrealistic expectations of what a corps-level orders briefing looks like.

Other than that favorites change over time. Hyena Road was the most recent good war movie I've seen and I laughed my nuts off at War Machine.

Without doubt, The Longest Day. Of course, I am familiar with all the actors. It seemed like everybody who was anybody in Hollywood wanted in on that movie. Even my dad, who fought in WWII, liked it. That pacing is more to my liking. Liked A Bridge too Far, as well, although it makes me wince at times. READ THE BOOKS, TOO. More has been revealed since the books were written, but they are still excellent.

The Battle of the Bulge - this movie probably did more to make me a modeler and gamer than anything else. I first saw it at the post theater when my father was stationed in Heidelberg. The next morning he took my brother and I to the Spielwaren in Eppelheim and bought Roco minitanks King Tigers and Shermans. We battled back and forth across the dining room table for days. We had an HO scale train layout under the Christmas tree and wanted to play the Long Toms on the train scene so Dad went back and bought a flat car and two Long Toms, one in traveling mode and one in firing mode and we got into a fight over who got the cannon in firing mode. That was the end of the train set and the mini tanks until after Christmas. Well, that and the fact that we knocked the Christmas tree over while we were having a pillow fight on the babysitter's watch.

I always liked the Seige of Firebase Gloria - F Lee Ermy at his best with decent treatment of both sides.

"When the chicken learns to swim, the duck will catch worms" promo cracks me up.

It's interesting that I haven't seen Kelly's Heroes or M*A*S*H mentioned. They were made in my college years, but I despised them then and still do. I did and do still enjoy the MASH tv series.

None seemed based on reality, so for entertainment mixed with SOME accuracy, my three are:

Tora Tora Tora, A Bridge Too Far and Saving Private Ryan

The Enemy Below -Everyone was treated as humans along with a great story. Should have been marked as based on a historical incident because there was one that was pretty close to the plot. DD-215 attempted a ramming and ended up, just like the movie, riding up on top of the sub. Both were eventually lost but no sub crew were rescued in the real incident. Actually took place in the North Atlantic rather than the South Atlantic. Amazingly the X-O had just run a drill earlier that week or the previous week that was very close to the actual incident. The crew just automatically jumped into the firefight they had with the sub's crew. Elevation, once again, saved the day. Similar was DE-51's engagement. She also rammed the enemy sub and had a firefight but she survived the engagement.

Twelve O'Clock High. The US Navy used it for a time for lessons on leadership.

The Bedford Incident and Fail Safe. Both were timely and topical movies of how, unintentionally, the Cold War could easily go Hot.

Too many more could be listed.

How could you hate kelly's heroes? That is good clean fun.. only started to really enjoy it as an adult. It's fun and does not take itself to serious ...Your killing me panzer.....killing me.
