Decals for Carriers

Post by Submariner »

Calling all 1:2400 builders out there. Great decals for 1:2400 carrier decks have been available from another company that match GHQ's great ships for several years now. However, the producer has indicated they will discontinue GHQ decals at the end of this year. Seems to be a lack of communication.

GHQ, please reach out to Flight Deck Decals. Two great companies colaborating is great for their clients!

GHQ should buy rights and include or sell the decals.

Yes, Please! Six carriers sitting there with plain deck blue flight decks and no lines or hull numbers. Just sad.

Someone from the forum had done some a year or two ago but had them on E-bay for only a short time. Available only by pay-pal, which I will have nothing to do with. By the time I found a business in the region that buys and sells items on e-bay for individuals they were gone. The positive about them was I could pay them cash when I picked the decals up. Once and done. No further erosion of my PPI. If GHQ carried them I could order them with any other item order from GHQ.

GHQ should buy them from the creator and add them to the sets. Support small business kind of stuff. I was wanting to buy a set of Flight Deck Decals for my Wasp I just purchased. Ugh.. Now I might miss the opportunity. Double ugh.

The website indicates decals are still available through the end of the year. I'm putting my order together now!

That would be a huge loss. I', going to put in an order as well, thanks for the heads-up. I was really hoping to see decals for the upcoming Colossus-Class from them. Without their decals, I'm most likely not going to be ordering another carrier. Even if I was able to do a decent paintjob, it'd just look off next to the other 29 "decal-carriers" in my collection....

Those decals are beautiful, its going to be a loss for sure.. I don't have the patience or the talent to paint decks like that.

As the original creator of these decals, I’m happy to see they are still in use and still a desired commodity. In fact, I used them the other day to paint Kidō Butai and the USN Early War carriers (photos below) :D I no longer produce them (they were passed on to a long-time GHQ collector who many of you know well, and he passed them on to FlighDeck who expanded the range into 1/3000 and added more ships). Speaking from experience, it was hard to keep up with them when you have a day job; there was always something of higher priority in life. I do hope they continue to be available somewhere!

That's awful, if they discontinue them. I'm a few years away from needing those.

This is so disappointing on many levels. I got back into 1/2400 scale ships (as a collector) because of Tanner's talent and the availability of his deck decals (carriers just don't look good without them). I then took over production of them for a couple of years, but I just didn't have the time or talent to expand the range. Then Dan took over and created Flight Deck Decals and massively increased the line (and added many others)

However, for some reason, Flight Deck Decals are not able to link their website to this forum. Why not? They are not a competitor, they are a product enhancement and drive more sales. When I produced them I was allowed to provide information and links (I understand that I only produced decals that fit GHQ models). In addition, where the product photos use these decals they are not even referenced - it simply states decal not included. Why wouldn't they credit Flight Deck Decals?

For those suggesting that GHQ take over the line and/or include decals with the models, that just wouldn't work. The price of the models would go up and in many cases there are multiple different options (different patterns etc). In addition it would create way more complexity for GHQ..

GHQ have great products that are made better by Dan's Flight Deck Decals. Tanner and Dan have done a fantastic job of greatly enhancing the ships with their talent and efforts - it sucks that they are going by the wayside

I just completed a large purchase from Dan. There were several later ** CENSORED ** Class that were indicated as out of stock on the FDD website, but Dan printed at my request to fill my gaps.

GHQ! I think all it might take is acknowledgment that FDD is out there and maybe even some pics "shown with FDD decals". Please consider a connection. As new carriers come up, I would hate to not have the option of an FDD deck. I love GHQ and have been purchasing for over 30 years. This could be a win/win!

I agree, GHQ should work out an agreement. I decided to build a modern navy because the decals a FDD exist. I think it would really help GHQs sales to at least acknowledge them. As to it costing more to include them with GHQ ships,. They could sell them under license. There is a whole host of ways this could be a win win for both. I am like most, in that I do not have the patience or time to do a deck that looks right and does not actually take away from the detail of the beautiful sculp. I started painting a WWII carrier, did so bad on the deck, that I stopped painting it and never started the second one. Then stopped painting ships all together.....just saying.

Or just pay him for the decals - and put them in the catalog as an accessory item. Might even keep him on "call" when a new product is in the pipeline so he can get started on a new set.

I.e. Contract him to fill the need. If he wants to continue producing decals for Navwar et. al., let him.

I just placed another order too. I have made multiple order over the years and I will really miss them once they close down.

I will not purchase any new aircraft carriers from GHQ without deck decals. I sure hope something can be worked out so that decals can be made available in the future.

This will be a big loss if something isn't done by the end of the year. :(
