MERDC Camo Paint Colors

Post by Extra Crispy »

Want to try my hand at a few American tanks in the Summer Verdant camo. Would prefer not having to mix my own colors so my troops match over time, and because I'm lazy.

What paints do you use for this camo scheme?

I’m most certainly the wrong person to chime in about moderns, but I can say that I do mix my own colors quite a bit, it truly isn’t time consuming, and I think having them all not look the same looks sooo much better. Even some slight variations in shade an go a long way to making things visually appealing.

Summer verdant is the green one right? I use Tamiya paint (because that's what the local hobby store carries). This is what I use:

NATO Green (XF-67)
Flat Earth (XF-52)
NATO Black (XF-69)
Buff (XF-57)

Modern really isn't my period but both Vallejo (71.202) and AK Interactive (AK11653) do MERDC paint sets. Each has 8 colours for the full gamut of MERDC schemes (I assume) so you may not want to buy the actual sets just individual paints from them.

This link should provide you with everything you need to know except which colors match the FS numbers for Vallejo or AK if that is what you want to use.

http://gurth.home.xs4all.nl/afv/merdc.html

I use AK Real Colors which for summer verdant corresponds to

Forest Green FS34079 RC027
Light Green FS34151 RC028
Sand FS30277 RC084
Black FS37088 RC082

All my MERDC is winter verdant which is the same except substitute
Field Drab FS30118 RC085 for light green above.

The vehicles should be 45% each of the greens and 5% each sand and black. Sand is typically squiggly lines and black is crows feet. Yeah those are technical terms...

And my friend Redleg, like most cannon cockers is not only deaf but color blind too.

When I was in from 1976 to 1987, we were always in "Winter Verdant" wherever I was stationed. We never used the "Summer Verdant" combination in any of the units I served in.

I have also mentioned, as has Panzergator, that in 3AD we did not use the sand color in the scheme but substituted more black.

We used summer verdant at Ft. Polk, 5th ID. Dark green, light green, sand, and black. '79-'81.
