Understand. An M1A3 would have the cutout. Look at the differebce between GHQ's M1, M1A1, and M1A2.
Oh I see what your talking about I’ll change the thread to M1 a2.
Wow ….. you know your tanks!
Btw: I ended up with a initial order of 200. I’ll keep you guys posted when they arrive.
Keep going back. Only the initial model, M1 w/105mm gun, would have the original armor panel over the sprocket. Any later model would have the cutout. HOWEVER, they are YOUR models and they may be whatever you say.
I made abe's XM803, but I'm designating them MBT70A1, claiming they are the full up MT70 without the 20mm, but with M85 50cal at te commander's station, as I believe it would have been ad it gone into service. And if I can figure out how to do it, I will print more with a 120mm gun.
We can be kinda flexible in this hobby.
I like what you're doing.

nashorn88, did you get your 200 tanks yet? I got ahold of the guy and he printed me 50 M1A2 turrets with trophy. I should get them Monday..cant wait to get them.
The reason for the rear skirt cutout was that, with the original skirt, mud would build up between the skirt and sprocket, causing the track to ride off, the sprocket to shear, or the final drive (connection between sprocket and transmission) to fail. Just the misery of a thrown track is enough. M1 crews used to take the last panel off each side. If the sprocket sheared, the final drive could also be damaged. That meant removing the rear deck and pulling the power pack.

Yeah I got my turrets. I bought 50 of them. They are really really nice. I’m astounded at the level of detail that 3D printed parts have. Thanks again for passing along the info.
Finally had a look at the unpainted pic of the new turret. Definitely 120mm. Really nice-looking. You have a nice addition to your collection!
