M142 HIMARS

I just bought the HIMARS and I am not 100% sure I am fitting the mounting part to the MLRS launcher correctly. It seems fairly obvious how the two pieces come together at the one end, but the Wedge part does not seem to fit into anything or mate against anything specific. Does anyone have a picture how the two pieces fit together, where it is not already attached to the chassis? Is this like the British bridge layer, where part of it had to be trimmed back a little to fit int a slot on the bottom surface of the MLRS Launcher?

Can someone post some pictures? Wish GHQ would, at the very least, post some pictures on there web site, on how some of this stuff fits together.

Thanks in advance.

Would you post a picture of the items that are giving you some trouble. I do not want to pull a vehicle apart or search to see if I have a pack around, then open it. TY.

I have some HIMARS in the motor pool at home. I'll grab some pics when I get home and post them.

How many HIMARS per battery, how many batteries per battalion?

Redleg, thanks. Its the bottom part of the launcher. I will post pictures later today, if I get time. Grandkids are inbound.

Panzer,
Global Securities had this to say:

"Each HIMARS system consists of a launcher, two resupply vehicles, and two resupply trailers. Each HIMARS battalion will contain three firing batteries, each equipped with six launchers and their associated resupply vehicles and trailers."

https://www.globalsecurity.org/militar ... marsxs.pdf

Of course, GHQ does it again and I am one vehicle short of a full HIMARs battery. LOL. I will make it up on the next order. I know it would be a pricing nightmare, but it would be cool if GHQ would package them based on the size of a platoon, troop or battery. Then price accordingly.. LOL. I guess its always cool to have a few vehicles lying around in your motor pool..

Not the best photos, but here are a couple of shots of the launcher. Let me know if you need different angles.

Redleg,

Thanks for the shots. They are just what I was looking for. It seems I was right, how I test fit them. Just ODD because GHQ puts all these recesses in there and it lead me to think there was a reason for it. Like something needed to fit together or something.. Just like an engineer to over think it. LOL.

Thanks Hoth. Yes, I wonder how many times I've wondered why GHQ didn't have a package of the appropriate number.

Is it because they started off with cold war and WWII where platoons we're 5 vehicles? I get keeping all packs the same, it makes inventory and cost projections simple. Kind of why southwest airlines only operates 737s. Easier. If I am right, still does not stop me from wishing it was different.

Dunno. Tank platoons had 5 tanks, but armored infantry had 4 halftracks. Later mech platoons had 4 tracks. Tank platoons didn' drop to 4 until the '80s J series. But that's only US. Other countrys are different. And things change. Eight inch batteries in armored divisions went from 4 to 6 pieces in the '80s. 155 batteries ent from 6 to 8, then back to six.

I order multiple packs, anyway, because I try to have at least company-level units. The extra pieces conribute to the next unit most of the time. If you game, spares come in handy when pieces are lost or damaged. It is how I end up with more battalions than I ever intended and it has also expanded and modified my collection goals. Sometimes, it has interfered or sidetracked me, as well, because it became more important to finish off a partial unit than move on. But when you are sitting there with4 extra vehicles, it's difficult not to order enough to finish another battery, even though you know damned well that you will eventually have to order the other two batteries to go with it.

They aren't the same, though, if you compare models of a similar complexity, that were released within a few years of each other. The LARS rocket launchers come in packs of 3, HIMARS in packs of 5. Then we have cases like Bergepanzer 2 (2 per pack) vs. Bergepanzer 3 (5 per pack), Leguan bridger (1) vs. M104 bridger (2) etc...

Also I still can wrap my head around the fact, that I'm paying the same price for 5 tiny little, single-piece Iltis jeeps as for 5 highly detailed, multi-part T-72 TUSK MBTs.

Pricing and packaging really is a gamble at GHQ. ;)

Well, it appears the great People at Battle Order have released a video on the HIMARS system. It list the size of Batteries for the US Army, US Marines, British, and Japan. It also has TO&E for the MLRS. Link below:

The Canadian Army was also looking into acquiring the HIMARS as well probably for artillery units. I might think of grabbing them from the Sentry Box the next time im there.
