A Bundeswehr question

Post by Roger H »

Prior to the fall of the Iron Curtain , did the Bundeswehr concentrate all of its Leo 2s in the Panzer Brigades and the Leo 1A5’s were in the Panzergrenadier Brigades in both Panzer AND Panzergrenadier divisions ?

Not completely sure on this, but here's a PDF on their general organization in the 1980's:

That came from this site:

https://www.fireandfury.com/

It's for a rules set called "Fire and Fury" and covers a wide range of eras. I don't see anything that goes beyond the Cold War era so - I'm guessing no?

You can find a lot of reference material under the Support tab.

Someone posted it on this forum some time ago. It's in German, but there are some cool resources. I just glanced through the Die Bundeswehr 1989 Teil 2.1 - Heer document and I see that Panzer Brigade 28 had LEO 2s but Panzer Brigade 29 had Leo 1s. I didn't dig into it too much, but the info that you're looking for is probably in there.

That's a great scource. Thank you! :)

I was just browsing a bit through the first book and it's sad to see just how much the German army has been degraded in the past 30 years. If you include the Panzeraufklärung as armoured battalions, they had ~80 Panzer and ~60 Panzergrenadier battalions and a proper mountain and parachute division. All of them fully equipped, and just two years later, they took over an additional two Panzer and four Mot.Rifle divisions from the NVA...

Now they're struggling to field a single, fully-equipped and functioning brigade....

From what I have read they were starting with the Leopard 2's in the Panzer Brigades, which was almost complete by 1989. After, they were going to equip the Panzergrenadier Brigades which had actuall started. In turn the Leopard 1's were to replace the M48A2G2's in the reserves and then phase out the M48's. But this plan was not completed because of the end of the Cold War.
