Player Locator?

Is there, and if so where, a player locator for GHQ gaming?

I like what I see here, but no one else that games around here seems to like the smaller scales, both ground combat or naval. I was hoping to see if there were others in my area (New Hampshire).

Yeah, I saw the club thing after I posted, but clubs seem to be far and few between. I can only imgaine that there must be more gamers than clubs out there?

We have discussed adding an opponent, or player, locator to the forum section of our website. Is this something that many of you would like to see? Use? Have any ideas/suggestions about? Any input on this from our much valued forum users would be appreciated.

Thank you,
GHQ

If you go to the member list you can sort by member location. There are a lot of people who don't list their location, but it's a good place to start looking.

An opponent locator would be a cool addition to the website.

I was considering posting in the club list, but I don't want my info (email address) quite so public. I'd prefer only registered users gain access to this or even better, private emails like in the forums.

I think it would be a great addition!

Finding opponants (or gaming buddies) has been a persistant challenge over the years, and is one reason my own participation in the hobby has run in hot-and-cold cycles. Finding this forum, and on this forum finding Thunder, has re-energized my participation in micro-armor in a big way.

I would think a player-locator could be done one of a couple ways. One would be simply to create a "Froogle" community. I don't know too much about it, but it provides a way to use Google's satellite mapping to locate yourself for your community of your "Google Freinds" (hence Froogle).

Another way would be a zip-code or area-code matching script. You could have a "secret" field in profiles for those who want to be "findable" to add their area code. Then they are identified to anyone who does a player-locator based on an adjacent area code. The area codes themselves could be kept confidential from other viewers, only the forum name of the co-located players could be revealed, for contact using the Forum PM facility.

Just some ideas ...

There are standard metro statictical area zip codes available through several organizations and programs. Using an SMSA listing as a base for a gamer list would be the easiest way to organize a data base for micro armor gaming throughout North America.

A ZIP code listing with a code name for each player would insure privacy and allow access to the list and could provide an e-mail notification program through existing Yahoo systems, I believe.

I am all for a system to find willing players, but I also really like the idea of some level of privacy. The zip code idea sounds like a winner.

I agree

I agree that the player locator would be a good idea.

FYI, there is a gaming group at IU South Bend that I am the president of (I know, i just ended a sentance with a preposition). We regularly do RPGs, but many are breaking into the microarmor and historic minis.

We just started a new web forum at http://groups.google.com/group/iusouthbendgg

i would like to see a player locator. I dont currently know anyone that plays mini wargames, though a few friends have shown some interest in the goings-on in my little workshop as of late. Anyone in the Cleveland OH-Erie PA area? (I live in extreme NE ohio, midway between these 2 cities)

Back to organizational questions...

Using the SMSA as the basic organizational tool followed by the zip code within the SMSA and using a zip + player number would give you very easy to organize players.

Example:

SMSA: St. Louis
Zip Code: 63120
Player #: 0001

STL63120-0001 Players Identity in the system...

There are also Illinois zip codes in the St. Louis SMSA but that would not matter because the organization within the SMSA would be numeric so the zips would fit right in place...

Players not in SMSA would be organized by zip code only.

Should any competition enter into the equasion a won/loss score could be indicated or a rating of experience could be applies... all kinds of options available.

Food for thought...

I found a script and modded it to fit our needs. A little rough, but fully functional: (I think ;) )

Feel free to sign up. You can search by state or country.

As an example, search Arizona and you will find me.
