WWII Naval Rules - Atlantic

Does anybody know of a good set of WWII naval rules that include data for doing the battles that occurred in the Atlantic Ocean between Britain and Germany primarily from 1939 to 1941? "Command at Sea" doesn't have a module for this. "Seas of War" doesn't have submarines and is missing some key data on aircraft. I even tried using Avalanche Press' new series "Second World War at Sea" but that is too focused on being a boardgame. Does "General Quarters" cover this and if so is it still around? Looking for some insight.

Thanks,
Chris

I went to Navwar's website and it doesn't appear that they sell GQ for WWII anymore. They have a listing for WWI and then they have a listing for "WWI and WWII Update". Not sure what that means and there is no e-mail address listed on the contact info page. They do have another game listed called "Sea Wars Fleet Action" which covers 1890 to 1945. I wonder if this is a new game that is replacing GQ. Rather than trying to place an international call from the US to the UK (not to mention the timezones involved).

Does anyone know if the update version of GQ is the full game or just some addenda, and does anyone know if this other game (Sea Wars Fleet Action) is any good or not? Their website doesn't have much info and no photos.

You can get GQ I & GQ II through Strange Cargo in the US. Not sure about the update, though GQ III is rumored to be out Q1 2007.

Chris,

You might want to take a look at SEAPOWER by Alnavco. I found it to have a very good balance between "realism" and "playability". While it does not contain specific scenarios, it has the combat system and ship values needed for nearly every ship (of destroyer size and larger) of World War II, and there is a supplement which does the same for World War I. It was designed primarily for 1:1200 scale models, but is easily adaptable to any scale.

I've looked at a lot of different rules sets over the years -- most of which I can't even recall any more -- and have kept coming back to SEAPOWER. I do look forward to GHQ's upcoming rules... but until they come out and "prove themselves", I will stand by SEAPOWER.

Regards,
Tom Stockton

Howdy,

The Navwar site appears to list GQ2 as "WWI and WWII Update", which it certainly is.

GQ has a minimalist approach to subs, but other than that it would work very well for what you want. Do get GQ1 and GQ2 if you decide to use these rules - the "Update" part for WW2 is worth it.

If you are interested in small #'s of ships involved like Denmarck Strait or River Platte, you need something with some detail. Detailwise, Seekrieg>Seapower>Ben King

Thanks for all the great info guys, I think I'm going to give Seekreig V a try. Even though it is expensive it looks like it is current, being updated on a regular basis, supported by a website and forum, and has a lot of handy player aids.

What about Seas of War?
Does anyone know how this system compares to others that are out there?

Its pretty new so I don't think anyone's done a comparison. Probably has the most accurate gun armor values. Plus the best price - free

Cbovill had a game using it and here is his AAR
