Thunder:

When the US came ashore in North Africa, there were more light tanks than mediums in the Armored Divisions. The theory was that the mediums would do the heavy fighting, and the lights would do the exploitation.

This idea was changed after some combat experience had been acquired. By Sicily, the divisions were at their 3 mediums to 1 light structure.

I don't know the TOE details ... I'll try to get you something over the weekend.

BTW - the M3A1 and M5 Stuarts were used by the US in North Africa. the M3A3 was actually later than the M5, and only made it to NA in small numbers. I THINK the M5A1 was a later still, and I don't THINK it saw any service in NA.

(M5A1 has the turret bustle on the back. M5 has the same round turret as the M3A1.)
