Hi everyone.
Had a question about the GHQ model UKN20 BB Revenge.
My question is "Can this model be correctly used for all five of the R-Class Battleships or is there significant customizing that must be made to the model to correctly represent each of the five ships in this class?"
Thanks!
Scott

Scott,
I had the same question a while back and found out that two of them had pole main masts and three of them had tripod main masts. Revenge and Resolution are I beleive the two with pole masts. I believe there were other differences as well - would have to consult my books. But that was the big one that stuck with me. Easy way around that is to install some tripod masts for the others by either using spare masts or ordering some as parts. The mast that comes with HMS Barham would probably work.

Scott,
I was kind of hoping that GHQ will solve this problem by building it before I have to go and do a modification. I did a little more research and the model GHQ sells works for HMS Revenge and HMS Royal Sovereign. What I plan on doing when budget permits is order three Revenge's and three spare mainmasts from Barham and use those to replace the mainmasts that the Revenge's come with.
Michael,
I'm not sure I understand your question, but I can tell you I haven't been current on the Soviet navy since the '90's when it fell apart.

No hard and fast rules. For the Brit's, modifying ships in the same class was governed by need, the battleship holiday of the interwar period, limited funding, and limited dock yard space. The R class battleships didn't receive much attention in the interwar period due to lack of funding. So only three of them were able to get the improved tripod main mast installed. But ships like the Queen Elizabeth class had much greater potential due to the superiority of the initial design, so three of them were able to be heavily modernized. The remaining two would have received similar upgrades but the war broke out. Hood and Repulse would also have been modernized but for lack of funds, dockyard space and the war having broken out. It's interesting because Hood was supposed to have been modernized by 1941 with improved deck armor being one of the changes. She was just too much in demand to be taken out of service and she was in better condition vis-a-vis other captial ships in the Royal Navy.

British R-Class Battleships
With the older ships (of all navies, and in most time periods), there is considerable configuration variation introduced within any given ship class as they are modernized. The British R-class BB's are no exception.
About the only way to ensure that you are building a "correct" version of the ship in question is to do some research. A good source for me, when it comes to WW2 British battleships and cruisers, has been this website:
http://www.world-war.co.uk/index.php3
There is a section here discussing the R-class battleships both as a class, and by individual ships. Lots of good pictures as well, to allow you to plan out your customizations.
Good Hunting!
