Jacksonville,FA to Alanta, GA area game stores?

Post by thenorthman »

Hello all,

Is there any stores that anybody know of within like a 8 to 10 hour drive of Alanta, GA (specificly Thomaston,GA) that I can visit?

I am going to be stuck for eight days down there with nothing to do...thinking aobut bringing micro armour to paint but don't know what the airlines would think of the little bottles of paint. So thought about picking up a few new botles of Vallejo if there is a store down there and then just mailing them back.

I'm in Atlanta and in the last few years we've lost a number of game stores. Outside of a few Hobbytowns the only proper, tradtional hobby shop which specifically addresses the needs of the historical gamer is The War Room in Atlanta's north-north eastern suburb of Duluth:

http://www.thewarroom.com/

They carry the usual GW fare but the heart of the store is military model kits and figures (eg 1/72, 1/35). All periods are covered in the plastic kits from anicents to moderns. They even have a random smattering of GHQ microarmor (WWII and Moderns). They also have lots of 15mm Old Glory ancients and some 25mm Old Glory Historicals (lots of those were sold off in a recent sale but they still have a nice if limited selection). There are plenty of game tables also available (about 8 or so 4' x 6' tables and they can be pushed together for larger games.)

The owner and his wife are very nice and he is in fact active duty Army and just returned from the Middle East.

Let me know when you'll be here as we have some standard games that we do:

- "First Saturday WWII Game" at The War Room run by Tom Thomas

- There's a WWII Microarmor game at Mark Luther's house this coming Saturday (north west burb of Atlanta)

- "Second Saturday Game" (July 14) at a community center just North West of Atlanta (this month is going to be a micro-armor moderns insurgents vs. US Stryker brigade and then a Viet Nam skirmish using the FNG rules)

- And we game at Tom's house every Wednesday night (WWII)

If you won't be here for any of these games we could always arrange something! On Atlanta's north side we've developed a very nice group of historical gamers.

It looks like we fly into Alanta July 27th and then my wife fly's out Aug. 6th.

I'll be renting a car on the 6th and have 8 days to "explore" the area. Then fly up to Gencon on the 14th. This added 8 days was cheaper than purchasing another round trip ticket from Alaska.

Thinking of checking out some "historical" battle sites, maybe Johnson Space Center, etc.

I would love to get a game or two in of something. Either in North Alanta or Jacksonville.

The only thing I have "experience" playing is Flames of War, Jonny Reb III, Mein Panzer (rusty on the rules), Fire and Fury rules for Civil War, and currently have had three games using Cold War COmmander.

Thanks for the offer's! I will contact you all via PM as the time gets closer...plus will be checking out the War Room!

Just checked out their weekly schedule and might bring my Hungarians (mid war) for FOW on the 9th.

Well it is looking like I am going to have to pass on the FOW at the War room on the 9th now....going to attempt to attend the Shuttle launch on the 9th! :D

My luck is it will be delayed or what not and then wouldn't be able to attend since the tickets are non-refundable but nonthless I will attempt to. Have to get up at 5am (Alaskan time) to purchase the ticket. They say sometimes the events sell out within two minutes of the release!

Thanks for the link to the military museums!!!

We will see!

Well, after that recommendation, I now feel obliged to set a game when you're in town . I'm running a late war game this weekend(chance to use some Comets), so I am inclined to do something early. Feel like playing in a Poland '39 game while you here? Contact me off forum and we'll get something definite on the schedule.

Wow! Sean has some serious pull at NASA! Who knew a mere wargamer could get a shuttle luanch date changed just so he could game? After all of the recent craziness in the world things are making sense once again.

Well I didn't get the ticket to view the shuttle launch from the spot that is six miles from the pad ( they were not kidding that things sell out within 2 minutes of going on sell, I even had all the billing/shipping information filled out and by the time I had hit complete it said that it was sold out!), so I guess I am viewing it from the "main center" so I am sure it will still be an experince.

Thanks Hugewally, it means a slightly tight drive (dropping wife at airport the night of the 6th and then driving down to try to spend all day down there) to get there. The "info" package your suppose to print out with security information and what not on it had I guess an old time on it. I was getting a little confused when (easy to do) when I had two different screens from the same site saying two different times! :D

With this in mind I guess I might try this: go down to KSC on the sixth (early 7th), spend all day the seventh checking KSC out and then see the launch if it is on time, take the 8th exploring anything else near by or on the way back up, try to make the 9th at the Warroom, then maybe get a game in at Mark's :D (emailing him now) if he is available 11th (since it sounds like he games on Saturdays).

All the other times I can spend exploring the museums in the area up to the 14th. 8)

Awsome!!

Mark,

I am only getting spotty reception out here. Camping up here at Deanli (Mt. Micknly (spelling is off)) so the email isn't going out. Have to mess with the settings probably of my MAIL on my mac and do not want to fiddle with that since I am only up here till the 4th.

The email will go out on the 4th.

Thanks,

Sean

If you need a place to relax after the camping I suggest the Denali Sourdough Cabins and then dinner & drinks at the Overlook Bar & Grill. Great place to clean up and unwind...

That is so funny we were just looking and drove up to the "Crows Nest" / Overlook bar and grill.

I take it you have been up here then and checked it out.

We are going to take a "bus" ride tommorrow to the back side of Denali.
