dragon6,

I painted a sample patch on my screen so you could see it. Oh wait, that won't work. I know I'll paint some on my webcam that'll be better.

Hello again all,

Finally finished my latest project. The French Aircraft Carrier Clemenceau, complete with some home made Super Etendard, F8-E Crusader, and a Super Frelon Helicopter. I had to make my own aircraft because of the lack of French 1:2400 Naval aircraft. I orignally made 10 Etendard, but kept losing them while painting them so ended up with just the 5 on the Carrier :? .

Any way here she is without and with her aircraft.

Hope you like her but for now, It's am back to painting the WW2 ship H.M.S. Exeter, while I wait for 5 Modern U.S. Carriers to arrive.

Cheers for now everyone,

I'm back from vacation and it is nice to see that beautiful French carrier - and with scratch built airwing no less - very nice Mark! Great job on that deck too! You keep tempting me to start building modern ships.

...and HMS London is here! Check out the new stuff section. I know she's only one and she is without either her fore or main tripod mast, but I don't care, I need British heavy cruisers to fill out my fleet and am so glad to see this ship!

Chris,

So the new GHQ CA London is only good for HMS London? :(

I'm not very familiar with this class of British heavy cruiser. How does she differ from the rest of the London class (HMS Devonshire, HMS Shropshire, and HMS Suss-ex) and the Kent class (HMS Brewick, HMS Cornwall, HMS Kent, HMS Australia and HMS Canberra)?

I understand that HMS Cumberland and HMS Sufflok both had the cut down deck aft of Y turret. These I believe are best suited for using the GHQ CA Suffolk model.

Thanks!

Scott

Yes, UKN40 is valid for only a single ship. It represents London as she was after her reconstruction.

London was the lead of a group of four cruisers. Initially, they closely resembled all the other County classes (Kent, Norfolk). Early in the war (I don't have the exact date at the moment), London was severely damaged by a mine. While in dockyard, the superstructure was extensively remodeled. The result was similar to that of the Southampton and Gloucester class light cruisers. None of the other British heavy cruisers received the modified superstructure.

We are still waiting for good 1/2400 models of Kent, Australia, Canberra, (Cornwall, Berwick), and (Devonshire, Shropshire & Suss*x). If you are interested, please go to the Consolidated Micronauts Wish List for 2008-2009.

Thanks Don. What a bummer. I'd love to see GHQ provide new models to complete this important line of heavy cruisers. But I am at least pleased to see this one.

Thanks for the reply. :)

Yes, my setiments as well.

These county class heavy cruises saw extensive action through out all of WWII and in every theatre. Right now GHQ only has models to represent:
HMS Suffolk
HMS Cumberland
HMS Norfolk
HMS Dorsetshire
HMS London
HMS Exeter

London was rebuilt from 1938 to 1941, and it was intended that her sisters would also be upgraded too, but war broke out. However, the increased weight top-side on London caused severe strain resulting in cracks in her upperdeck, this was braced, and then the cracks formed below the waterline forcing a continuing stream of refits until 1943. So good thing the others didn't get this "upgrade."

Unfortunately, just to represent the 15 County class cruisers for the first half of the war, it looks like it would require 9 different models to represent them accurately. GHQ has built 4 of these with 5 to go. Considering the attention to detail GHQ is renowned for and what we have seen them produce in the USN, I think eventually we will see GHQ produce all of these, I just hope it is sooner than later.

Assuming all changes up to the start of the war in 1939, I arrange them as follows:
Already built by GHQ:
UKN2 HMS Suffolk would work for herself and HMS Cumberland
UKN8 HMS Exeter would represent only herself
UKN33 HMS Dorsetshire would work for herself and HMS Norfolk
UKN40 HMS London would represent herself as rebuilt

Not yet built by GHQ:
HMS Kent would represent only herself
HMS Berwick would work for herself and HMS Cornwall
HMAS Australia possibly represents herself and HMAS Canberra (I need to do some research on that one)
HMS Devonshire would work for herself and HMS ** CENSORED ** and HMS Shropshire
HMS York would represent only herself

...and I would like to see the models built to represent them in the first half of the war when most of the action at sea was happening that could affect the outcome of the war. The action in the second half was big too, but the outcome had already been decided, so it is more important to represent these ships when England stood alone against the Axis. So for example, build Devonshire with X turret still in place.

In this big list of ship models needing to be built I put my vote on Devonshire first, since she can represent up to three ships, and Australia second, since both Australian ships led very active careers and were involved in some popular engagements.

That's my two cents!

Chris,

Thanks for the posting on the County class Heavy Cruisers. I think you explained it best.

I also concur with your request to have GHQ produce a model for Devonshire first, then followed by a model for the two Austrailian ships (HMAS Austrailia and HMAS Canberra).

I currently use models of GHQ UKN33 HMS Dorsetshire for my HMAS Austrailia and HMAS Canberra. This was the closest model I could find for these two ships by GHQ. I wouldn't mind replacing them later if GHQ would release the correct model.

Thanks again for the response to my post. :D

Okay, I got a chance to look more into Australia and Canberra. It looks like Canberra was the least updated of all the ships (no armor upgrades or aircraft hangers,....) but the updates that were done to Australia (her sister) are such that I'm not going to say that they are signficant enough at this scale to make a difference. So one model should suffice for both.

Hi Gent's,

One quick question for you. Do any of you have the model of the USS Wasp LHD-1? If so, what aircraft come with the model if any?

Cheers for now,

I don't have a Wasp but I asked GHQ what aircraft were with the model and this is their response
Thank you for your interest in our products. The aircraft in the HUS-16 are Chinook. Please let us know if we can be of assistance to you again in the future.

Thank you for your support,
GHQ
I was hoping for a wider assortment. I also wonder if this is correct. The Marines use CH-46 not CH-47, although they are similar in shape. Some CH-53 and AV8 would have been nice.

Hi Dragon,

Many thanks for the info on the Wasp LHD. I was also thinking that there might some AV8 Harriers with the model as well, but it sound that I will have to ask them for someHarriers from the H.M.S. Invincible model when I send an order in for the Wasp.

Looking closely at the picture on their site I can see some AV8 Harriers on the model, but they must have been added just fro that picture unfortunately.

Anyway, many thanks once again.
