Here is a write up on a forum on a game we had this weekend on a drive up the Fulda Gap in 85...

http://www.thewarevent.com/forums/showthread.php?t=237

Many years building the GHQ forces. Not up to the standards of some of the true masters on this site, but I'm doing the best that I can.

Voltigeur ran the Soviets in this game and we had several others as well. A Great time was had by all.

ALWAYS a pleasure to see our wonderfully detailed GHQ models on the table. Here I sit 32 yrs after I bought my first set of King Tigers and JagdPanthers in 78, and to this day I STILL consider them the best detailed minis I've ever seen in this scale.

It has been an enormous pleasure building up my collection over the years!

Frank

Fulda Gap '85

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Yesterday I participated in Frank Waugh's, "Battle of Fulda Gap '85", using his modern armor rules. The sceanrio is based on a Soviet invasion against NATO forces in Germany:

The Soviets attacked with the 20th Motorized Rifle Division.

Marshall was running the 60th MRR (Motorized Rifle Regiment)-1st Bn-BMP, 2nd Bn-BMP, 3rd Bn- BMP, 4th Bn (Tk Bn)-T-80 BV (with Reactive Armor bricks). He was fighting you in Fulda with the 1st Bn in Fulda while the 2nd, 3rd, and Tk Bn's were charging up the Highway to the left of Fulda.

Wayne was running the 55th MRR- 1st Bn- BTR, 2nd Bn- BTR, 3rd Bn- BTR-60, the Tk Bn of T-62s was broken up with each platoon allocated to screen each company of the infantry. 1st Bn was fighting it out on the edge of the woods, 2nd Bn was in the woods, and 3rd Bn was about to enter the woods.

On the NATO side;

Eddie was running 2nd Sqdn of the 11th ACR. E Trp was in front and slugging it out with the 55th MRR, with G Trp behind in reserve on the right side of the jammed civilians. F Trp was forward and H Co (M1 imp) was in reserve on the left side of the jammed civilians.

Greg ran the 2nd Bn of the 48 Mech Inf Bde of the 3rd Armored Div. E Co (Bradleys) was slugging it out in Fulda while, F, G, and H Co were further back (all hidden).

The 1st Bn of the 33rd Armored Bde (M1a1s) were engaging the 55th MRR on the right side of the road when the game was called. A Co had lost 2 platoons of M1s and routed to the rear (whereupon they were rallied behind the lines). B Co took their spot and C, and D Co were coming up fast.

We used hidden deployment and hidden movement with Frank as a GM. TheSoviets began with an attempted quick strike along the hills with transport helicopters which met up wth ground to air anti-aircraft which was no fun for them! :-)

Once the Abram tanks arrived and moved forward the Soviet thrust was stopped, with the Soviets trying to take out as much as they could with their field artillery. The combat in Fulda turned into a desperate house to house fight with both sides trying to feed more men into the fray to gain an upper edge.

The rules play very well and quickly, and IMHO give a very good feel for modern combat of the period. This is the same scenario that Frank will be running at Texicon in May (see: http://www.texicon.net/ Miniature Events).

Attached are a few images from the game. If you get a chance to go to Texicon and you like this period of wargaming, I strongly encourage you to sign up for Frank's game!

Why, in my day, we didn't have counters. We had to paint the unit values onto little rocks. maps?! Hah! We had no paper maps! We put our rocks in the dirt. It sucked when it rained, but we soldiered on!!! Don't get me started on dice...

Hi All,

We played a hard fought game last Saturday that gave me a chance to use my Sherman Crabs and lots of demolished buildings.

The scenario was based on the 3rd Monmouthshires efforts to clean up some German bridgeheads west of the Maas in late November 1944. The Germans should be a platoon of Fallschirmjagers, but I used some cano-ed grenadiers instead. We used Toofatlardies' I Ain't Been Shot Mum rules and the new players seemed to enjoy them and caught on fairly quickly. I thought the apocalyptic looking terrain would go over well with the WH40K crowd at the shop.

Hi Mark

Another great looking game and a great AAR. I always enjoy seeing your stuff. Now I have to get busy and get my own AAR done. Thanks for sharing again.

mluther,

I love the AAR on your Broekhuizen battle.

By a strange co-incidence a friend of mine has just posted up a really good description of the battle at the Fire and Fury Battlefront website. Link to the scenario is here:

I'm interested in this as a relative of mine was in the 3rd Mons. He's passed away now but I'm currently working on a scenario for the 'Battle of the NorMons' at Pavee in August 1944. Should be ready soon.

battler,

Would that be R Mark Davies? I stole quite a bit of info from his scenario. The scale of my games is smaller so whenever I look through one of the BFWW!! write ups I try to pick something that would work in IABSM scale. Bob MacKenzie also is a great source of scenarios.

I made the town much more leveled than actuality to atract some of the WH40K crowd at the shop. It certainly got some attention.

Yes, Mark is helping me with the 'NorMons' scenario. He knows more about the Brit arty than I do. :)

And he's Welsh, so he has a vested interest in the 3rd Mons.

Battler,

Well do mention that I enjoy his scenarios and look forward to anything he develops. There is actually a IABSM scenario booklet that has nothing but Welsh battles.

Mark,

The 3rd Mons 'NorMons' scenario is finally ready.

I've put a copy with good graphics over at File Factory:
http://www.filefactory.com/file/b0aff29 ... orMons.pdf

There is a copy over at the Fire and Fury website but it has degraded graphics and can be a bit difficult to view in places.

Latest game we played was a Russian Front winter game set in the Schisselburg salient Jan, 43. The panzers took it on the chin this time and the Russkies did better than historically.

I decided to follow up th Russian Winter game with a France 40 scenario. The game was based on action around the Pommery Farm north of Juniville June 10, 1940. The Charge of the Chars

Mark:

Your games are brilliant. I saw the link from the Yahoo! Micrarmor group, too. Great stuff. Really. That's what gaming should be. At least in my book.

And so I study and learn.

I've just (finally) finished my Romanian forces. Think I might try a replay of your Juiniville battle with Romanian infantry standing against some Soviet KVs or T-28s. Should be a hoot.

I find your games so impressive. Please share with us where (how) you researched this particular engagement.

(And BTW -- for those who play/played WW2OnLine, Juiniville is nearly legendary! )

Thanks Mark 1.

One of the best sources for scenarios is Bob Mackenzie's site. He had a great Juniville sceanrio with map, OOBs, and links to references.

Thanks once again Mark,

I have been on the extreme end of busy the last few months and haven't had much chance to look at the forum.
Per usual, it if filled with awsome pictures and comments, but your AAR's always get me to pull out my stuff and think about what I need to do next. I probably do 20x the thinking compared to the actually doing.

Anyway, thanks again for a couple of hours of mindless viewing and entertainment.
