Naval Battles Question
I'm looking for a real WWII battle that was basically just destroyer on destroyer. United States versus Germans or Japanese. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Destroyer Battles
Three battles from the Solomons Campaign meet youor criteria:
The Battle of Horaniu- August 18th, 1943
Battle of Vella Lavella- October6th,1943
Battle of Cape St. George- Nov. 25th, 1943
All three battles were an all 'small boys' fight. I don't know of any US versus German destoyer battles, but the First Battle of Narvik was British versus German destroyers. There were probably other all destroyer actions later in the Pacific campaign, but I can't think of any of the top of my head. I'm sure other forum members can provide more information.

Naval Engagement: Dutch East Indies Battle of Balikpapan ( Wikipedia description )
While the Japanese invasion force was landing at Balikpapan, on the early morning of January 24, at around 02:45, the 59th US Navy Destroyer Division under Rear Admiral William A. Glassford and Commander Paul H. Talbot attacked the Japanese navy escort led by Rear Admiral Shoji Nishimura for about four hours.[1] The U.S. Destroyer Division composed of USS Paul Jones, USS Parrott, USS Pope and USS John D. Ford attacked the twelve transport ships and three patrol boats escorting them. The Japanese destroyer escorts were undertaking a search for a Dutch submarine which had been sighted earlier.[1] At least three transport ships, the Kuretake Maru, Sumanoura Maru and Tatsukami Maru and patrol boat P-37 were sunk in torpedo attacks.
The battle was the first surface engagement, in southeast Asia, the United States Navy participated in since the Battle of Manila Bay in 1898.[1] However most of the torpedoes launched by the Allied destroyer missed the targets or did not explode. Because the landing had taken place around 21:30, the raid was too late to stop the capture of Balikpapan
Though not listed as Destroyers they were rerated from earlier Japanese Momi DDs
PC-36, 37 & 38 all Momi class DDs rerated to Patrol Craft
The following Japanese forces were to the north, but an engagement could have been had they not been chasing a sub away.
