Hi

I use standard painter stripper for houses from the hardware store. It takes the paint off well and I find it makes the Super glue quite brittle and you can peel or chip it off easily afterwards. But it is very toxic and it burned through some thin rubber gloves I was wearing at the time... :(

Cheers
Kieran

Has anyone tried using Pinesol for paint stripping? If so how long did it take and did it do a good job and was full strength used or diluted.

I used Pine Sol until learning about Simple Green here on this board.

My last project with Pine Sol was some M3A1 Stuarts. Had to soak them for 3 or 4 days. After that it took a lot of brushing to clean off even a large portion of the paint ... so much brushing that the metal had brush-marks, and some of the detail had been obliterated by the time I was done. Even with all of that, it was hopeless trying to get the paint out of recesses, and here I mean not just out of the running gear, but out of the corners where the front slope met the fenders, or under the gun mantlet, or around the exhaust cannisters on the engine deck.

It is noxious to work with, and it doesn't do half the job that the Simple Green does. At least not to my experience. I'm done with Pine Sol for stripping my micros.

I had the same results with Pine-sol as Mk1 so i am going to try the Simple Green.
i have also used Polly S easy -lift off which works pretty good.

I found this 'paint stripping' experiment and thought it was very informative and well written.

Good luck with it all!

BTW, I've become a convert to Simple Green, now that I have found a supplier in Australia.

I sometimes wonder if getting the product at a discount (ebay etc.) is worth the rehab and possible destruction to bring up to my standards. I find that just buying a fresh brand spanking new one from GHQ to be easier and maybe more cost effective, seeing as I have had to order barrels and turrets this last go around. I have quite a bit of run throughs removing paint and it is tedious. Of course milage and money may vary depending on where the refurbs come from. Not to exclude the sentimental value of the refurb project also!

Some of the work I did was to items that were long needed to do over. I collected alot over the years and some were my first paint jobs. As I improved my painting skills. I decided to recondition some old favorites and other which were from different collections sold at conventions and on ebay. Others were unique out of production castings that no longer exist from long gone manufactures. Ie, ISM/CM.

Poly super strippa (Semi-gel paint and varnish remover) by Le Page from the hardware store.
A couple of $ for 500ml can, a life time supply.
Ten minutes then rinse will take just about anything off.
You do need gloves but no bad smell as its non-flammable.
Once you get a production line going you can do a lot in one afternoon.
It also takes off the old crazy glue well (old tooth brush helps).

69 Eland's, 18 Rooikats, 15 Ratels and about 40 Samil trucks so far.
Only problem I had was fishing out the small parts from the gooo. It starts off clear then takes the colour of the paint coming off the model. Hard to find the smaller turrets.

I've yet to find a paint job it won't remove and my own are some of the worst you would ever see

I've regularly used Pine-Sol in the past, which mixed results. It take a long soak to break up old paint, and it doesn't come off easily, takes a fair bit of scrubbing. Also it stinks like doom. Still, it does work.

That said, I'm switching to Simple Green. I bought a jug of it, but it got misplaced somewhere in my garage or basement... bound to run across it eventually.
