The Last Grenadier

Post by Cav Dog »

I was on a business trip to the LA area earlier this week and on the way back to the Burbank airport I saw this store out of the corner of my eye as the car service whipped by, It was on Hollywood Way. Anybody have any G2 on this store? They don't seem to have a website. I may try to get out there more often in the future if this is a good FLGS that stocks GHQ!

The Last Grenadier

Hi Cav Dog

I have been to The Last Grenadier but it has probably been at least 10 years ago or so. They used to have an okay selection of GHQ and other historical stuff but I have no idea what their status is right now.
In the last few years I have been going to Brookhurst when I'm in the area although it is probably around 50 miles south of Burbank in Garden Grove. Brookhurst does have a decent selection of micro armor.

Last Grenadier is in Burbank. But, use to at different location before its current location. It use to have a base with 2 sand tables. My old armor group formally met there 15 years ago. The same group now known as The Steel turtles Micro Armor Group meet in Santa Clarita California. Another location is hosted in San Diego Ca by Pathfinder. He too has a new sand table. He recently relocated to SD from back East. He also was a long time member of the group. but moved to he East for a number years and has recently reunited with the group. PM me if you live in Los Angeles or San Diego if interested. This group has been gaming since the 80s. A well rounded group of gents.

Last Grenadier currently can place orders for GHQ items.

In Long Beach CA, The War House has a good assortment of micro armor.

Brookhurst Hobbies carries the product and can too order from GHQ.

In San Diego CA. Game Town in Old Towne SD carries the product and can order directly from GHQ as well.

Used to be two Last Grenadier shops, no? One in Burbank, and a second on Reseda Blvd out in the West Valley ... maybe Tarzana?

I lived near Reseda for one year, back in 1982. Two game shops on the same boulevard, within a mile of each other -- Last Grenadier and Black Watch. What an embarrasment of riches!

But the Last Grenadier on Reseda closed long ago. Last time I dropped by the one in Burbank (somewhere between '98 and '01?) they had their remaining micro armor in a close-out bin. I picked up a few items that weren't really on my hot list, but hey at a discount we might all buy some random stuff, no?

Still probably a useful shop for paints, brushes, and terrain items. But alas, no more micro armor.

Brookhurst has the best selection I've seen in years. A good selection of GHQ, but also a few other manufacturers' cast resin buildings and such. At least, they did the last time I was there (about '05?).

Last Grenadier & history

Post by Sven »

The Last Grenadier was originally in the trunk of Norm Flam's car during the mid 70's. Norm Flam very strongly supported historical gaming & micro-armor. The first store front was on San Fernando road below Olive where it lived for many years (two 6x8 gaming tables & a small sand table) & hived a branch in Northridge on Reseda blvd south of Northridge blvd next to the "Black Watch" store. Norm Morris was the first manager of the Northridge store & it had a 6x8 gaming table & a 4x6 gaming table. For many years this was the state of affairs while development companies played with the downtown Burbank area - including closing it off & making it pedestrian only for several years. Then they designated the building for demolition & the Burbank Last Grenadier moved north on San Fernando Road to a much larger 2 story building where I built 6 very nice gaming tables & helped build a very large sand table in the downstairs area. Though he always had a few military books for sale before this time Norm started building a very large collection of used military books for sale since he had the room. After a couple of years Norm sold out to Rocky who moved first to a new building on San Fernando Road after a major redevelopment in the area & then was forced out & moved to the current location on Hollywood Way. Rocky was never much of a Historical or Armor player & switched the focus of the store to a very good collection of used military books & more fantasy gaming. The last time I was there (I moved from the area about 6 years ago but have visited a couple times since - the last time was 2008) it was cluttered and the historical section was disappointingly small with no micro-armor and mostly the fantasy & card games & comic books predominated, but the military book selection was still large & very worth a visit to the store.

Thank you for your courtesy. I was already aware of that and posted a remembrance on another forum. Sadly the other Northridge start-up manager passed away in 1999 from complications due to alcoholism, violent rages, and drug abuse while in her early 40's.
