How to read the TO&Es?

Post by Ragnar65 »

Hi Guys,
could anyone please give me so advise how to read the TO&Es?

See this how it´s written in the TO&E of a German Infantry Battalion:

Infantry Platoon 3 x Infantry
Does this mean, one Platoon has 3 Squads? So for MATG 3 Infantrystands? And what about a PltHQ?

Infantry Support Platoon 1 x 81mm Stummel Mortar (2)
What does the 2 in brackets mean?

MG Platoon 2 x MMG

Mortar Platoon 4 x 120mm Mortar (1)
What does the 2 in brackets mean?

Panzerjaeger Company# 3 x Panzerjaeger Platoon, 1 x Panzerjaeger, 1 x Panzerjaeger (HQ)
What does 1x Panzerjaeger stand for? Is it the 2iC?

The TO&E's on the website are written for MAMS (MicroArmour: Micro Squad) so the "stand" or playing peice represents a squad of infantry or single vehicle. Those TO&E's can be used with MATG (platoon scale) by simply looking at the "company" lines and using a number of palying pieces equal to the number of platoons listed.

So for example:
Infantry Platoon: 3x infantry = 3 stands (squads) of infantry

And in MATG:
Infantry Company: 3x Infantry , 1x Infantry Support, 1x Infantry HQ = 3 infantry stands, 1 'Support' stand, and 1 HQ stand
However it is unusual to use company HQ stands in a MATG game as their TO&E's don't include them.

Artillery in MAMS is modeled on the individual tube (arty piece) or section of guns/tubes. The number in brackets tells one how many sections of artillery are in a 'stand' and this is the number of artillery impact markers that arrive if the unit passes the requisite cohesion die rolls.
Artillery in MATG is modeled at the Battery level so the number represents the number of impact markers that stand delivers down range. Section 7.6 covers this in both rule books.

a panzerjaeger is a generic term for a german self propelled ATG. Sorry if thats a bit elementary I mean no disrespect. this type of weapon is not included in the free rules weapons list.

Hi Leif,
well, so this: " Infantry Support Platoon 1 x 81mm Stummel Mortar (2) " means that this Supp Plt contains 1 Mortar-stand giving 2 Impact-markers?

What kind of weapons those Panzerjaegers are is clear to me... ;) What I´m not sure about is what that "1 Panzerjaeger" between the 3 Platoons and the HQ stands for... Would it be 1 single vehicle additional to the 3 platoons and the HQ?

Most of the panzerjaeger companies had 14 vehicles (3 platoons of 4 plus two at company HQ. It is the same organization of heavy tank companies.

The rules do not foresee a 2nd in command so the 14th vehicle is by itself.

There were also panzerjaeger companies
with 10 vehicles (3 platoon of 3 plus 1 HQ)
Ubicumque et semper

Hi Ragnar65

Yes, the Inf Support Plt would have 1 stand on the board and it would deliver 2 impact markers.

As noted the on-line TO&Es are for microsquad and can be adapted to platoon scale.

As the Pz Jaeger company had 3 platoons + 2 vehicles, in MATG this would usually be interpreted as 3 stands only, as company commands are often ignored or agregated into the platoon stands or battalion command stand. Case in point is the soviet tank battalion, where there are 2 tank companies of 10 vehicles each (9 tanks in 3 platoons and 1 co HQ) and 1 battalion HQ tank. This is translated as 7 stands, 6 platoon stands and 1 Btln HQ stand. The command tanks of the companies are 'rolled up' to the battalion level to represent overall command.

The MATG rulebook provides many, many organizations for companies and battalions at platoon scale. But the methods of arriving at how many stands are in each unit and how those numbers were arrived at are not documented clearly anywhere to my knowledge. I have my own guidelines that I follow and I guess others do the same or just use book values as guidelines when there's a question.

My advise is to get a copy of the MATG rulebook and check it out if you're planning to play Wehrmacht 47 games or WWII platoon scale games. If you're more interested in squad/1:1 get the Micro Squad rules first.

regards,
Leif
