GHQ models used for Axis and Allies

Post by GHQ »

Every few weeks we receive an e-mail from a customer who wants to outfit their Axis and Allies game with GHQ models. Many people have done this over the years, and each one has put together a different mix of models. Has anyone here ever put together an Axis and Allies set of GHQ miniatures? If so, would you share your experience? and what models you chose?

Thanks,
GHQ

A&A

Post by gunbunny »

GHQ,

I have to admit I cut my true gaming teeth on the 80's version of Axis and Allies and have many fond memories for it. The interest in A&A led directly to the discovery of micro armor and your excellent line for me, I remember humorously my mom asking why I needed to buy 5 tanks for 5.95 for a board game when whole board game cost 15-20. If she could only see the budget I have spent on them now.

Currently our gaming group plays the 1940 large version that takes up most of a 4' x8' table every couple of months and we are now converting to actual use of micro armor in platoon to division scale actions. While the thought of using your miniatures to enhance the look is entertaining the game mechanics do not lend toward a good mix of units. Mainly due to board space and the non scale of the pieces that come with the game. The planes and ships are not in scale with the land units etc. If I were to choose a mix that sounded good, and I will only include ground units because the navy and air force would be ridiculous in price probably would be 10x the cost of the A&A game, it would be like this:

Germany:
Tanks - Panther or PIV (G81 or G545 you would need at least 10 so 2 x pack)
Infantry - Indv Inf (G144 x 1 if you do them spare in set up or 2x)
Arty - 105/150 mm (G54 or G134 more on preference probably 2x pack)

Russia:
Tanks - T34/76 1941 (R1 x 2)
Infantry - Indv inf (R48 or more likely R64 x1 or x2 see above)
Arty - 122/152 mm ( R19 x 2)

UK:
Tanks - Churchill III or VII ( UK10 or UK55 x 2)
Infantry - Indv inf ( Uk59 or UK96 x1 or x2)
Arty: 5.5" (UK66 x 2)

America:
Tanks - M4A1 (US90 x 2)
Infantry - Ind inf (US76 or US95 x1 or x 2)
Arty: 105 mm (US8 x2)

Japan:
Tanks - CHI-HA type 97 (J10 x 2)
Infantry - Ind inf (J6 x 2)
Arty - Maybe J4 x 2

Italy:
Tanks - M13/40 (IT1 x 2)
Infantry - Ind inf (IT16 x 2)
Arty- 105 mm (IT25 x 2)

This is only for the major powers in the latest version we use. If we went all out I would also have to suggest for China and ANZAC, but I'm even guessing at some of the lesser powers as it is. My frame of reference is Germany and Russia. Either way this would be a good starting point but an expensive one!
