Thanks for the idea, Mark. I'm about to build a couple more boards and will have to play with that - or maybe dark circles instead of rows....

Matt,
That is a great set up. How are you doing contours on your hexes, it looks like there is a hill in one of the second set of photos posts?

First time doing terrain hexes

Post by AllenRockwell »

This was a demo game I was running all weekend at a convention in Los Angeles a little while ago. I normally do fixed, hard terrain boards ... this was my first time doing modular hex terrain. I kinda liked it because of the flexibility it offered.

Hi guys, I just developed a small village terrain piece I wanted to share with you. If you remember, I used a cast resin system to form two molds to build two different bombed out houses. After casting them I tried to make them unique by adding small items and painting them.

I then started my village. I used a cheap piece of acrylic as a base and then added brick plastic sheets to mimic cobblestone. I left enough room for my nine houses and a couple of bigger spaces. The houses all have the same base size so I can interchange them easily. It was a simple layout for a test run. Note I chopped up styrene for bricks - that is the small pile on the left

I used caulk as a base layer and added debris such as sand, stones, and other small items.

I had two craters I was going to place in the middle of the streets, and after building them I went ahead and painted.

Here are some shots of the final results, I'm very happy about this pilot project and intend to improve upon. I haven't used it in a game yet, but I think it will work out really well.

BurtWolf,
Nice looking village! Really impressed with your process there. For the bricks did you get a really thin piece of styrene and cut them or did you have to first make a thin strip then cut the bricks? Also, where did you get the cobblestone roads? Is that something that you can get pre-made or did you have to create that yourself?

Thanks guys! Getting feedback always keeps me going! I am a real novice, but am learning as I noodle around. The casting bug has bitten me - looking to do rail cars next

The road is N scale brick styrene sheet made by JT via ebay. I don't like it as much as Plastruct but it was a bit cheaper and I wanted to try it. I don't use it for buildings, so I figured it might work well for a roadway.

The "brick" I cut was from using thin square rods of styrene and basically dicing it into little pieces. Probably not to scale, but it pops out to me much better and looks brick like.

you may find cobblestone sheet in N and Z scale in the Noch catalog

Noch is a German company manufaturing accessories for tailway modleling and is worth a look for many other type of road.

If you want to see some cobblestone roads try to find some images of the Tour of Flandres, a cycle race famous for its "pavé" (French word for cobblestones) roads, very hard for the cyclists.

Bunch of Buildings

Post by CDP »

Here is another project I have been working on since last Christmas. Building from British Company Levan. Smaller in scale than Timecast so closer to GHQ scale in buildings.

This is the Hotel it looks more like an Insane Asylum to me. Maybe its just me.... Still need to add water to the fountain.

Sdkfz 234/3 added to some pics for scale.
