What projects are people planning?

Post by 6mmwargaming »

Hi all

I'm interested to see what other projects people are planning or working on. I'll start with me :)

I've been away from the forum for a while (distracted by other scales :( ) but I'm keen to start on some 6mm again. The main thing holding me back has been a lack of WW2 and modern rules that I like. I was hoping Team Yankee would be good but it looks like the Soviets are basically the same mindless hordes as in WW2 FOW. For WW2 I might try the Battlegroup series or for higher level games, a friend wrote a set called Lightning War/Red Storm where 1 vehicle = equals 1 company.

Another reason I stopped with a lot of 6mm was my eyesight, but getting glasses has fixed that. I was at a point where I couldn't paint 6mm infantry to a standard I wanted and all the GHQ infantry I own has been languishing in a box.

But after a couple of visits to this forum, I feel inspired.

So my projects for the next year or so are

1940 BEF British army
Modern Soviet Cold War (paint some more of the 500+ vehicles I have)
British (Cold War) army (repaint )
1940 French DCR,DI and DLM forces

Terrain boards
I made some boards a few years ago and then started a commission for someone else to make more. I ended up selling them my boards and I have started on a few new ones. You can see the old boards here
http://www.ghqmodels.com/forum/viewtopi ... ain+boards

Town and City sections
In the thread above you can see a few ideas I kicked around. My current plan is to make a blank town area and have removable blocks of houses so I can adjust the layout and replace them with destroyed sections

Trees and forests
Another area that I haven't found a solution I like. I'm not sure whether or not to make the trees removable or just stick the figures on top. I did buy about 300 trees so I can make some bigger forest areas.
Also I have made a few trees myself and will continue to make some.

I am working on South Africans and various insurgent groups and Cubans to oppose them. So far, I have been using the Brushfire wars figures for the Communists and some Australian types for the SADF. I have vehicles from Scotia and GHQ. The Casspirs painted up very nice. I am basing vehicles and troops to protect gun barrels and add some diorama-like beauty to the table. I assembled and primed some GHQ Alouettes, but really prefer 1/600-1/700 air support. I got some Alouettes from A 3D printing outfit that fill the bill.

I also plan on some 80's era Cold War games and I have been assembling the hordes of armor I need for that!

Trying to finish up a German modern division. Pretty close. Have about 6 more Pumas and then some Marders for another battalion and the artillery.

After that, I'm going to work on my Soviets. I know most rules have the Russians having to use masses but I think the problem is inadequate artillery bombardment prior to the ground assault. The Russians mass their artillery and any NATO unit hit is really going to be shaken-up and vehicles destroyed. Games need to start incorporating this aspect into them. Hidden recon move or pre-planned artillery sites should be used at the beginning of the battle. People also need to remember the Soviets are not going to attack a unit equal in strength to theirs. They will move around heavy areas like this and hit weaker units. The Russian player should also have access to helicopters for major fights.

Paul has some good stuff that he is building. He is working on all vehicles in the motor-pool, all soldiers are being trained to a high standard, pre-positioning assets. My intel indicates that he is deploying PUMAs and Marders with the modern Germans. He has cancelled leave for the soldiers...watch out!

6mmwargamer... welcome back. I like your pics, the road/highway.

I am working on Norway and Swedish forces. Need to guard again Camastan and also BALZAC as both have nefarious leaders and plans that are self-serving to territorial expansion. Also working on some Dutch CV9035, only have 1 company as of now, desire another.
Working on a few USMC: a few more LAV25, MLRS, trucks, LVTP7, few Abrams all in 3-tone NATO.
Aussies: LAV25, a few trucks and LAV mortars, M113 w/MG turret. Need to pull some M1A1 AIM to paint. OH, I need a painter..... Need to work on my LCI(m) for the Aussies and the Canberra along with the Air Assault group.
I do need to pick up or trade for some items. Hope to take care of that in 1-2 months.
Then work on Italians...over the summer.
Chris

I'm going the other way and pulling back.

Like you I looked at Team Yankee and have decided to leave moderns until I find a rule set I like. So that leaves.....

Nothing. Oh, I'll need to add stuff here and there for specific games. I need to finish up a battery of German and Soviet artillery.

But after seeing some brilliant games here at Fall In I think I'll be working on terrain more than any thing...

I think modern rules need to incorporate more Soviet artillery. Their massed artillery would be used to soften up NATO forces and would leave many units dazed, pulling back or wounded. Scenarios should either have already considered the damage (remember in Team Yankee the M901's where destroyed) from artillery or put in the artillery portion. Also, having talked with soldiers who served in Germany, the terrain did not really favor the distance shooting of the US. Most engagements would be at 1500yds or less. At that point the T-72 would be able to start penetrating the M1.

Most rules look at Desert Storm for what Soviet vehicles could do. However, that is like comparing a F-15 and a C-5. Iraqi tank shells where not the quality used by the Soviets. It was a poor model that they developed. Effective against Iran and other Middle Eastern countries but inferior to the USSR rounds.

It seems like most modern rules want to heavily slant the favor towards the US. I feel this is being short sighted.

No painting/modeling projects right now. Mostly still hammering away at my army lists for 1:1 Epic: Ultra-Moderns. I have 4 WIP lists right now, in descending order of detail:

USMC MAGTF
Syrian Arab Army (+ Hezbollah/etc...)
PLAMC
generic Islamic insurgents

Cama,
You need to quit displaying that nefarious helo, so evil and scary. I bet that witch is riding in there.... How is Camastan? You have terrified BALZAC, they feel the pressure, similar to Poland in August 1939.....

Noble, What equipment are you vehicles are you planning to utilize for each of your groups you are to work on?
Paul B, what nationalities are you working on/have? What equipment are you planning to build for 1985 cold war?

Good stuff and plans. Let us know what, how and perhaps your expected/hopeful time frame.
Thank you, Chris

My freelance Balzac DF needs paint.
Will concentrate on one Mek Battalion with 2x Leo2A6 coy, 2x CV90 coy and 2x wheeled IFV coy.
Plus some local defence units for a small Island terrain area.

Enough reserve pewter to last the Winter.

Wow some interesting projects going on. I wish I could focus better on only a few.

It looks we all all looking for the holy grail of moderns rules. I had a look at the Team Yankee thread and the link and it doesn't look good IMHO. I'm not sure why they are previewing T72 as the Soviets would have had T-64/T80s, and their allies would have T-72.

I have played the predecessor to the Battlegroup series (if we're talking about the same rules) called Kampfgruppe Normandy and I enjoyed them immensely. The BG series seemed to tidy up a few quirks and look very prominsing for WW2 and beyond. I will look at these for my WW2 projects.

I'm amassing some forces for African 'Imagi-Nation' action.

Various mix and match troops and equipment for:

- 'insurgents' (lightly armed militia / insurgent types),
- 'government troops' and 'rebel forces' (regular or semi-regular forces, with varying degrees of obsolete to more modern and upgraded equipment); and
- 'western intervention' forces (state of the art tech, but generally small light-medium equipped rapid-deployment forces).

Should be fun! :)

The Marine list is based around a mech company in AAV7's, a tank platoon (I think I have M1A2s...), and heavy aviation support. I've stockpiled 1-2 of: AH-1W, CH-53, V-22, F-35B, and MQ-9 Reaper. I think my list has F/A-18's but I'm not sure I've bought one yet. I might need to get a UH-1 as well.

The Syrian list mainly represents a heavy elite formation such as the 4th Armored Division or the Republican Guard. T-72M1's with Reactive armor/T-55MVs for the tanks, and BMP-1s and BMP-2s for the mech infantry. 2S1 and 2S3's for direct-fire on board artillery support, as well as ZSU-23-4s. I'll probably buy some 2014 Russians for the infantry: they are the best choice for "modern body armor + AK" troops. I can use them for the Syrian Army and for Hezbollah attachments. Mi-24s and Mi-8's for aviation. GHQ doesn't have a Su-24 model yet.

I've honestly forgotten what I've already purchased for China, but the army list is meant to represent a Chinese MEU-equivalent, so: ZBD-05/ZTD-05 (aka ZBD2000 family) amphibious vehicles, Type 63A's, and maybe some WZ551's. Aviation support is limited to Mi-8's and Z-9 helicopters for now. I need more information on their rotary wing support, and GHQ needs to make more Chinese/Russian fixed wing aircraft (JH-7A, J-10, J-15, etc...)

Because of major back surgery, I have a lot of time on my hands. This is what I am working on.
1. Strip paint off many WW2 vehicles and repaint them.
2. Rebase my infantry to more on a base rather than the 2-3 that I have now
3. Do more varied terrain for my Terrain Maker hexes.
4. Repaint some of my infantry to a higher standard.

I look at the posts from people and their painting etc and now I want to try to paint better.

I'm using 4 weeks of recovery to also work on some paint projects. In addition to the Puma's I have completed the following:

5 Fuel HEMTT
5 Cargo HEMTT
4 Patriot launchers
12 Geppards
15 Jaquars
5 Leo IIA6
35 Strykers
10 Hips helicopters
6 Super Stallions
1 NH-90

There might be some more but for the first week and a half I was not too motivated.

I have on my bench:

2 Kiowa helicopters
Patriot FCR radar
10 Strykers
5 MGS Strykers

I think if I can wrap-up all of these then I will be close to starting my Russians again.
